Billy Graham : the authorized biography by John Pollock( Book )

31 editions published between 1966 and 1987 in 5 languages and held by 1,220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Billy Graham has cooperated with John Pollock by opening his mind and heart to such an extent that future biographers can only build upon the story set down here. John Pollock tells he Graham story from its simple beginnings in a frame farmhouse near Charlotte, North Carolina. As a boy, Billy was busier with framing and pranks, baseball and random reading than he was formal studies. He grew tall fast; he 'borrowed' his father's car to race it over country roads; fell in and out of love; and thought the devotional books his mother read to her family 'all hogwash.' It is not only the life of Billy Graham that John Pollock tells here, but also the dramatic and skilled workings of his association on the 'Team.'; the methods, tested over and over again, that are followed to lay the groundwork for successful crusades and to help those who become converted to persist in their new Christian lives. Many people who have resisted the appeal of Billy Graham because of misunderstandings about his approach to the racial issue or because of misinformation about the perseverance of Graham converts, or who mistrust the crusades because of dubious financing of other, earlier evangelists, will -- upon reading this book -- see Billy Graham and his message clearly. For Billy Graham is revealed here as a man who not only practices what he preaches, but who time and again has gone beyond wisdom and beyond strength to do Gods' work. - Inside cover

"William Wilberforce (24 August 1759? 29 July 1833) was an English politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. A native of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, he began his political career in 1780, eventually becoming the independent Member of Parliament for Yorkshire (1784?1812). In 1785, he underwent a conversion experience and became an evangelical Christian, which resulted in major changes to his lifestyle and a lifelong concern for reform. In 1787, he came into contact with Thomas Clarkson and a group of anti-slave-trade activists, including Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton. They persuaded Wilberforce to take on the cause of abolition, and he soon became one of the leading English abolitionists. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for twenty-six years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807"--Wikipedia

This book is an updated account of the inspiring and influential life of Dr. Billy Graham. When the hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, President Bush immediately proclaimed a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance. For the interfaith, interdenominational service at the Washington National Cathedral he chose Billy Graham to give the address. At that terrible hour no other clergyman, whatever his office, could so aptly bring the Word of God to America and a watching world. At eighty-four, Billy Graham remains one of the most respected people in the world today. He has addressed over eighty-two million people face to face and at least one billion people through television, radio, and satellite. Yet he is far more than an evangelist of integrity and vision; he is a Christian statesman whose profound influence on the growth and depth of Christianity across the world cannot be overestimated. This official biography of Dr. Graham is based on his private files, correspondence, and interviews, as well as the author's widespread research. This book was written by John Pollock, Dr. Graham's official biographer. Parts one and two (1918 to 1978), based on Pollock's authorized biographies, have been abridged and contain new material. Part three (1978 to 1983) deals at length with Dr. Graham's controversial visit to Moscow, which can now be seen as a factor in the fall of communism. Part four (1984 to 2003) updates the story to recent events, including the horrors of September 11 and the honorary knighthood Dr. Graham received from the Queen of England in December 2001. An 8-page section of black-and-white photos are new to this book. - Publisher

Kitchener : the road to Omdurman by John Pollock( Book )
