The Reformation of the sixteenth century by Roland H Bainton( Book )

138 editions published between 1952 and 2008 in 7 languages and held by 2,840 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Christian attitudes toward war and peace : a historical survey and critical re-evaluation by Roland H Bainton( Book )

33 editions published between 1960 and 2008 in English and held by 1,433 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Any scholarship that addresses the evolution of Christian perspectives on warfare generally references this book. Although the scholarship of this work is now outdated and critiqued, Bainton's work is foundational in the area. Bainton believes that the Christian community started out pacifistic, then developed the just war doctrine, and finally adopted holy war ideals. He traces this trajectory from the Early Church up through the wars and conflicts of the 20th century (this book was written in 1960). Finally, Bainton adds his critique of current militaristic ideas (especially in regards to atomic warfare). This book is well written and written for all audiences, however, it is best to supplement this book with more recent scholarship to get current ideas on Christian perspectives on warfare

27 editions published between 1953 and 2011 in English and held by 1,284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Michael Servetus, a Spaniard executed for heresy in John Calvin's Geneva, is remembered as an important Reformation-era theologian and as a physician credited with the discovery of the circulation of the blood through the lungs. His first book, On the Errors of the Trinity, so shocked both Catholics and Protestants that he was compelled to live under an assumed name. All but a few copies of his magnum opus, Christianity Restored, were destroyed shortly after publication. However, the case of Servetus ... marks the beginning of the idea of religious toleration."-- Back cover
The age of the Reformation by Roland H Bainton( Book )

27 editions published between 1946 and 1985 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,273 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With the aid of over sixty important sources, most of them translated and abridged by the author, this brief history brings an age of upheaval into sharp focus. It shows succinctly how a compelling ideology, the Christian faith, shaped the history of the Reformation. The religious revolution of the sixteenth century shattered an ecclesiastical structure and quickened a universal faith. The Christian heritage which the Reformation revitalized and transmitted to our time is still the source of Western man's ability to talk in terms of a universal justice, humanity, and the rights of man
