Balthus by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola( Book )

21 editions published in 1996 in 3 languages and held by 593 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a thorough overview of the work of Balthus (b. 1908), the elusive painter whose fascinating images of young women were first greatly admired by the Surrealists, and have remained so today. This controversial artist is exceedingly reclusive, and until the last decade rarely gave interviews or allowed himself to be photographed. As a result, both his life and his work have been the subject of much intrigue and speculation. Now, his eldest son, Stanislas
Balthus : cats and girls by Sabine Rewald( Book )

8 editions published in 2013 in German and English and held by 375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Balthus's lifelong curiosity with the ambiguities and dark side of childhood resulted in his best-known and most iconic works. In these pictures, Balthus (1908-2001) mingles intuition into his young sitters' psyches with overt erotic desire and forbidding austerity, making them among the most powerful depictions of childhood and adolescence ever committed to canvas. Often included in these scenes are enigmatic cats, possible stand-ins for the artist himself. Balthus: Cats and Girls is the first book devoted to this subject, focusing on the early decades of the artist's career from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. Drawing on extensive knowledge of the artist's life and work, as well as on interviews with Balthus and the models themselves, Sabine Rewald explores the origins and permutations of Balthus's obsessions with adolescents and felines. She addresses the crucial influence of such key figures as poet Rainer Maria Rilke, his mother's lover, who acted as Balthus's surrogate father, but also includes the previously unknown voices of the girl models: their recollections and comments provide a unique perspective on some of the best known and most controversial paintings of the 20th century."--Publisher's description

"With the death of Balthus in February 2001, the world lost one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century. Born into an aristocratic Polish family in 1908, Balthus grew up amid the most cultivated and artistic circles of Geneva, Berlin, and Paris. Brilliantly precocious, he developed early his dual fascinations with the East and with Europe's old masters - inspirations that show in the poise and peculiar timelessness of his paintings. But his work is also suffused with an eroticism and a sense of mystery that betray more modern influences." "Balthus was an artist of unflinching integrity. Out of step with the modern movement, he pursued his artistic vision in relative obscurity, hailed by only a tiny group of connoisseurs, until the 1960s. By the mid-1980s his work had achieved international renown, but he remained acutely wary of public scrutiny. He believed passionately that his paintings were to be looked at, not read about, or read into. As a result the enigmatic aura of his art came to envelop the man himself - even when, in his later years, he finally let down his guard and allowed journalists and scholars into his magnificent chalet home at Rossiniere in the Swiss Alps." "Following his father's death, Stanislas Klossowski de Rola has written a new introduction to this book, which presents Balthus's most important paintings. New to this expanded edition are Balthus's last painting, The Waiting, and the controversial Guitar Lesson from 1934. Rare photographs show the young Balthus in his studio, while more recent images by the legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, the artist's friend, complete this tribute to one of the great artists of recent times."--Jacket

La vie et les oeuvres du peintre Balthus
Balthus, time suspended : paintings and drawings 1932-1960 by Sabine Rewald( Book )

6 editions published in 2007 in English and German and held by 183 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Balthus's most important works were created between 1932 and 1960, when he lived in Paris and in Chateau de Chassy; a dilapidated manor in Burgundy. This period started with a scandal: the large-format pictures shown at his first solo exhibition in the Paris Galerie Pierre in 1934 have seemingly familiar motifs - young women standing at windows, receiving music instruction or grooming themselves. But they are charged with an aggressive eroticism that shocked the viewers - and were meant to do so. In the following decades Balthus painted portraits of contemporaries, street scenes and landscapes, and time and again his favorite motif: young girls on the threshold of puberty, that erotic state of uncertainty between childhood and womanhood. Many of these works undisputedly belong to the catalogue of twentieth-century masterpieces." "This volume appears on the occasion of the very first Balthus exhibition in Germany organized by the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, presenting 76 paintings and drawings from Balthus's most creative years."--Jacket
Balthus : works and interview by Mieke Bal( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mieke Bal's analysis is focused in the eerie sense of very real and very unreal that the paintings emanate. She considers this the heart of Balthus's work. Bal argues that the paintings draw the viewer into a world we know not to exist. This canny fictionality makes allegations of erotic appropriation naive and censoring. Reducing Balthus's work to the paintings of nude adolescent girls is, moreover, ignoring his many works that are not in the least focused on this theme. Color, space, genres or history are some of the key concepts that the author put in the center of Balthus's work."--Jacket

Balthus et le portrait by Camille Viéville( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in French and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

7 editions published in 2001 in 3 languages and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Balthazar Klossowski, known as Balthus, is largely regarded as one of the twentieth century's most important painters - as well as the most scandalous. His dreamlike canvases populated with pubescent girls in provocative poses garnered him both praise and scorn from artists and critics alike. This volume, edited by renowned scholar Jean Clair, includes more than 400 color plates and includes essays by the premier experts on Balthus's work and life as well as recollections of the artist by his colleagues and friends."--Jacket
