Ezra Pound and the sense of the past by
Norman Levine(
)
1 edition published in 1949 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
" ... The study of Ezra Pound is a complex study. He treats many themes in a highly individualistic manner but one thread does permeate through all of his poetry -- the sense of the past. It is not a limited past restricted to one culture. Pound jumps from Provencal, Chinese, Roman, Italian to the London of the 1890s with ease. In order to understand the necessity of this retreat, and the development of his writing within so loose a framework, it is necessary for the reader to examine, in chronological order, Ezra Pound as a personality together with Ezra Pound as a poet."--

The artistic principles of Gerard Manley Hopkins by
Paul Anthony Orr(
)
1 edition published in 1949 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Gerard Manley Hopkins has long been accorded an honorable place among the English Poets of the last century. But until recently his value as a critic went unrecognized. With the full publication of his writings, however, there has been an increasing respect for his pungently expressed comments on his contemporaries. One critic has advisedly pointed out that from his letters "one could extract a handbook of critical aphorisms worth more to those who are now writing, than imitative study of what was peculiar in Hopkin's verse, ". W.H. Gardner, perhaps the most balanced and thorough of Hopkins's critics, after a careful consideration of the poet's critical analyses, maintains: "To sum up, Hopkins's critical remarks with their vigorous style and constant preoccupation with definite ethical and aesthetic standards, frequently reminds us of the honest and trenchant manner of Dr. Johnson ... Though he could at times be harsh and hypercritical, Hopkins's taste was more catholic, his perception more versatile than that of Johnson, who had not enjoyed the advantage of early enlightenment at the feet of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keats. With Hopkins as with Johnson, however, it is usually difficult if not dangerous to disagree; in either case, disagreement always entails an exhilarating mental exercise, a salutary revision and reaffirmation of our own principles.""--

An investigation of the poetic imagery of Gerard Manley Hopkins by
Alan Heuser(
)
1 edition published in 1949 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The centenary of Hopkins's birth was celebrated in 1944. Many important books on the poet prepared at that time were restricted in scope or delayed in publication because of war-time conditions. Thus much material, including newly discovered manuscripts of Hopkins, has only recently (1948-49) been published. The work of W.H. Gardner is of special significance. In 1948 he edited the third edition of the Poems, which was enlarged to include many of Hopkins's early pieces. In 1949 he published the second volume of his Hopkins study, now the most complete and balanced examination of the poet. This scholarly activity favours a close investigation of the poetry ..."--
