Passant librement du mythe à la réalité, il a traduit les souffrances de son siècle avec une rare puissance imaginative, Les Massacres de Scio, La Grèce sur les ruines de Missolonghi, La Liberté guidant le peuple, symbole à jamais de la révolution. En 1832 au Maroc, il découvre, fasciné, la lumière implacable et l'"Antiquité véritable" ; aquarelles et croquis se multiplient, pour constituer le substrat d'une centaine de tableaux dont les Femmes d'Alger (1834). De retour à Paris, il se voue aux "grandes lumières de la peinture murale" (Assemblée nationale, Sénat), et après avoir versé "tour à tour sur ses toiles inspirées le sang, la lumière et les ténèbres", livre à l'église Saint-Sulpice le dernier combat de sa vie, lui ce voltairien convaincu qui n'a cessé de confier à son Journal, en même temps que ses réflexions esthétiques, ses questions et ses doutes
