Twentieth century architecture : a visual history by Dennis Sharp( Book )

43 editions published between 1990 and 2002 in 3 languages and held by 1,188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Millenial edition of Twentieth Century Architecture: A Visual History adheres to the original book's aim: to chart chronologically the development, strength, diversity and complexity of modern architecture. In attempting to provide a record of the twentieth century's architecture, author Dennis Sharp has purposely chosen examples which have had some generic importance or have played some innovatory part in architecture over the past 100 years." "Sharp tracks the development of architecture through periods such as modernism, revivalism, avant garde, classicism and expressionism in a decade-by-decade study of the changing face of structural design, art and culture. When the first edition of this book appeared in 1972 it very rapidly achieved the status of essential work of reference. Now, 30 years later, this greatly expanded and revised edition adds the key buildings and architectural concepts of three more decades to the survey and thus covers the entire century." "Industry professionals, students and all those fascinated by the art of architecture will benefit from this comprehensive guide to the great and sometimes controversial architectural achievements of our age."--BOOK JACKET
A visual history of twentieth-century architecture by Dennis Sharp( Book )

39 editions published between 1972 and 1983 in 6 languages and held by 1,180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The twentieth century has witnessed dramatic and fundamental changes in almost every branch of architecture. It has been a period of experiment in the use of new materials and constructional methods which has led to an extraordinarily wide range of buildings-from highly personal and emotional structures, to the cool geometry of pure forms. This is the first book to attempt in strictly chronological terms to survey all the major buildings of this century. It is arranged in decades from 1900 to 1970: within each decade, all significant completed buildings which have had a generic influence on twentieth-century architecture are examined. Each entry is fully documented, and the building's present state is given where known. Each building is illustrated with photographs, drawings and plans. An introduction sets the scene, looking back to the engineering achievements of the nineteenth century, to the architects technical inheritance and the aesthetic problems that have occupied architects and theorists of this century. Each decade is prefaced by a short evaluation of the developments within those years. The buildings themselves are presented in clear factual terms, and much hitherto unknown information is given. In addition to the decade chapters, the book provides a useful chronology of buildings erected between 1900 and 1970 and a comprehensive index. It is illustrated with nearly 1,000 monochrome and colour illustrations. The combination of background information with a large body of factual matter makes this book of exceptional value to anyone who is interested in the social and cultural life of the twentieth century. To students and historians it will become an essential reference work. -- from dust jacket
Contemporary architects by Muriel Emanuel( Book )

15 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 886 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"To strengthen the contemporary focus of this volume, we have added about forty architects and have deleted some whose activity ceased before World War II. In making these decisions, we have been assisted by an Advisory Board. As in the first volume, we have continued to define the word "architect" very broadly, so as to include planners, theorists, structural engineers, and landscape architects whose work seems to be central to the enterprise of creating habitable spaces in our day."--Editor's note

(Quelle: Cover, Band 1)
