The history of the Mass / by François Amiot by F Amiot( Book )

8 editions published between 1958 and 1966 in English and held by 508 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Church has chosen to surround the Mass, this essential act of her worship, with ceremonies and prayers, in order that it may be performed by her children with the surpreme reverence it demands, enlightened by faith and with abundant fruitfulness. She has provided for this both in the preparatory prayers and readings as well as in the specifically sacrificial liturgy, with the communion and the concluding thanksgiving. It is this assemblage of venerable formularies and actions that this volume examines in the light of history--to the end that a better understanding of their development and significance will better unite us to them for our spiritual profit
The liturgical books by Lancelot C Sheppard( Book )

12 editions published in 1962 in English and Undetermined and held by 460 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Liturgy, the prayer and praise of God by his people, must conform to the laws of the Church in order to be recognized by the Church. To assure this conformity, the books of the liturgy have undergone much reform through the centuries. One result of these reforms is a fuller participation in the official prayer of the Church by the laity. The author here traces the history of these books from their origins to their present, officially accepted forms, thus enabling us to understand; and understanding, to participate fully in the prayer of the Church
What is a priest? by Joseph Lécuyer( Book )

Surveys the principal doctrinal, theological, historical and controversial aspects of the Christian priesthood. The concept of the priesthood is analyzed in all of its historical senses as it applies successively to the apostles, bishops, priests, deacons, orders below the diaconate and finally to the lay faithful
The Mass in the West by Lancelot C Sheppard( Book )

4 editions published in 1962 in English and held by 436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Discusses those portions of the liturgy which have not yet been presented in this series but which are essential to an understanding of Western rites. Gives a full account of the Ambrosian rite because of its importance as an example of a Roman liturgy which has shown marked stability and which retains features which are essentially Gallic. A substantial discussion of the now-defunct Mazarabic rite is also included in order to present the pattern of the liturgy in the section of Europe north of the Alps and in Spain before the imposition of the Roman rite by Charlemagne. This volume also discusses the Lyons and Braga liturgies; however, they are treated more briefly due to their similarity to the Roman rite. In an enlightening chapter on the monastic orders, the author compares the Carthusian, Cistercian, Premonstratensian and Carmelite rites. Three appendices have been added to complete the discussion of the Western liturgy: these deal with the neo-Gallican rites, the Sarum rites, and the Roman-Slavonic liturgy
