St. Anselm's Proslogion by Anselm( Book )

266 editions published between 1900 and 2013 in 10 languages and held by 2,549 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Proslogium described discourse on the existence of God. The Monologium discussed on being of God, and the Cur Deus homo discussed why God became man. Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was one of the originators of medieval scholastic philosophy. This collection of his best-known philosophical works contains, among other things, the Proslogium, in which Anselm first put forward the famous ontological argument for the existence of God. Also included are Gaunilo of Maurmoutier's criticism of Anselm's argument and Anselm's reply to Gaunilo

The prayers and meditations of St. Anselm by Anselm( Book )

12 editions published between 1973 and 2006 in English and held by 475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mostly written between 1070 and 1080, before he became Archbishop of Canterbury, the prayers and meditations of Anselm of Aosta created a tradition of intimate, intensely personal devotional works written in subtle and theologically daring prose. While the Prayer to God is based on the Lord's Prayer, the Prayer to Christ is inspired by ardent private emotion and other prayers invest saints with individual attributes, with John the Baptist as the friend, Peter as the shepherd and Mary Magdalene as the forgiving lover, among many others. The meditations include a searching exploration of the state of the soul and a lament on the loss of purity, and the Proslogion discusses the mysteries of faith. With their bright imagery, beautiful language and highly original thought, the works of Anselm have secured a lasting place in both religious and secular literature
Basic writings: Proslogium; Monologium; Gaunilon's on behalf of the fool; Cur deus homo by Anselm( Book )

31 editions published between 1962 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ranging from such early treatises as the Monologion (a work written to show his monks how to meditate on the divine essence) and the Proslogion (best known for its advancement of the so-called ontological argument for the existence of God) to Anselm's three dialogues on such metaphysical topics as the relationship between freedom and sin, and late treatises on the Incarnation and salvation, this collection ... will be a boon to students of the history of philosophy and theology, as well as to anyone interested in examing what Anselm calls 'the reason of faith'." The major works by Anselm( Book )

13 editions published between 1998 and 2008 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although utterly convinced of the truth of Christianity, Anselm of Canterbury struggled to make sense of his religion. He considered the doctrines of faith an invitation to question, to think, and to learn; and he devoted his life to confronting and understanding the most elusive aspects of Christianity. His writings on matters such as free will, the nature of truth, and the existence of God make Anselm one of the greatest theologians and philosophers in history, and this translation provides readers with their first opportunity to read his most important works within a single volume

Saint Anselm : a portrait in a landscape by R. W Southern( Book )

3 editions published between 1993 and 2004 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this magisterial study of the life and work of St. Anselm, Sir Richard Southern provides the definitive study of one of the most complex and fascinating philosophical minds in Christian history. St. Anselm brings together all the elements of a man whose intensely concentrated search for God filled all the phases and aspects of his life and work. Nothing in Anselm's thinking was simply ordinary or typical of his age. (Barenes & Noble)
