Lucian Freud portraits by Sarah Howgate( Book )

11 editions published in 2012 in English and French and held by 515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Portraits were central to the work of Lucian Freud (1922-2011). Working only from life, the artists claimed, "I could never put anything into a picture that wasn't actually there in front of me." This major retrospective catalogue surveys Freud's portraits across the seven decades of his career. Featuring the finest portraits from public and private collections around the world, the book explores the stylistic development and remarkable technical virtuosity of an artist regarded as one of the most innovative figurative painters the medium has known. Freud's chosen subjects were often his intimates--family members, friends, and artistic colleagues such as Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Leigh Bowery, and David Hockney. Freud was a private man who rarely gave interviews, and his thoughts on the complex relationship between artist and sitter and the challenges of painting nudes and self-portraits are published here for the first time, documented in a series of interviews with Michael Auping, conducted between May 2009 and January 2011. An illustrated chronology of the artist's life provides fascinating insights into Freud's background as a grandson of Sigmund Freud, and his unorthodox artistic education
Degas and the nude by George T. M Shackelford( Book )

11 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 444 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Degas and the Nude" is the first book in a generation to explore the artist's treatment of the nude from his early years in the 1850s and 1860s, through his triumphs in the 1880s and 1890s, all the way to his last decades when the theme dominated his artistic production in all media. With essays by leading American and French critics, it provides a new interpretation of Degas' evolving conception of the nude, situating it in the subject's broader context among his peers in nineteenth-century France. It explores how Degas exploited all of the body's expressive possibilities, how his vision of the nude informed his notion of modernity, and how he abandoned the classical or historical form in favor of a figure seen in her own time and setting--whether engaged in overtly carnal acts or just stepping out of an ordinary bath.--

Lucian Freud : the painter's etchings by Starr Figura( Book )

13 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the foremost artists working today, Lucian Freud had redefined portraiture and the nude through his frank scrutiny of the human form. Although he is best known as a painter, etching is integral to Freud's practice. This volume accompanies a major Museum of Modern Art exhibition presenting the full scope of Freud's etchings, along with a critical selection of related paintings and drawings. Organized by Starr Figura, Lucian Freud: The Painter's Etchings includes seventy etchings - from the artist's rare early experiments of the 1940s to the increasingly complex compositions he has created since rediscovering the medium in the early 1980s - juxtaposed with some twenty-two paintings and seven drawings. Figura's essay in this catalogue examines the dramatic dialogue among mediums in Freud's practice, and explores the crucial cross-pollinating relationship between his etchings and his works on canvas. Pared down to essentials of line, often depicting figures cropped or isolated against empty backgrounds, Freud's prints achieve a startling degree of psychological tension and formal abstraction. Etching is here revealed as a medium uniquely suited to Freud's distinct artistic goals."--Jacket
Lucian Freud by Lucian Freud( Book )

Lucian Freud, 1996-2005 by Lucian Freud( Book )

16 editions published in 2005 in 3 languages and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Well into his ninth decade, the painter Lucian Freud (grandson of Sigmund) not only shows no signs of slowing down, he hasn't even adopted a signature "late style." Although most of the paintings and drawings in this marvelous collection are characteristically concerned with the human body, the painter's dogs are frequently (and vividly) present; there are a number of landscapes (including an evocative Constable tribute); and his portraits include a number that are focused very tightly on the face. These portraits?very small scale, and with an exaggeration of detail that miraculously avoids caricature?culminate in Freud's controversial portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. A charming photograph records her sitting for the painting?the artist looks away from his tiny canvas while the monarch regards him with a look of wry amusement. The final portrait captures not only the queen's regal hauteur but also the defiance of a tough old granny whose life has been far from easy. This broad sympathy for the ways in which experience marks our faces and bodies has deepened in Freud?if he is "mellowing" at all it is toward an interest in character as strong as his interest in the flesh that contains it. The reproductions are of unusually high quality?Freud's highly worked and pebbled surfaces seem to stand out from the page

Lucian Freud herbarium by Giovanni Aloi( Book )

2 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Lucian Freud's portraits are known for their spectacular detail and unflinching gaze. Although Freud brought the same qualities to his paintings and drawings of plants, flowers, and landscapes, these are largely unknown. This elegant book shows how working with plants emboldened Freud to experiment with style and composition. Reproduced in sumptuous plates that allow readers to indulge in exquisite detail, seventy-five works--including Two Plants, Bananas, Cyclamen, The Painter's Garden, and Interior at Paddington--reveal Freud's singular approach to plant life. Readers unfamiliar with this aspect of Freud's work will find many similarities to his portraits--earthy palettes, unconventional rawness, and assiduous attention to detail. From the delicate realism of the cyclamens' petals to the bold brushstrokes that immortalize his overgrown garden, readers will appreciate Freud's ability to portray plants in new and personal ways. Comparative illustrations from throughout art history accompany essays on the history of plants in art and an appreciation of Freud's oeuvre. This monograph is a tremendous contribution to Freud's legacy, one that will enrich his admirers' discernment while also introducing his thoroughly original depictions of plants to a new audience"--
