Managers in the making : careers, development and control in corporate Britain and Japan by John Storey( )

17 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 1,495 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents an analysis of the processes by which managers are made in Britain and Japan. It provides a detailed comparative study of the careers, training, developmental experience, and job demands of managers in eight companies in four sectors: engineering, banking, retail, and communications. Data are from the following sources: interviews with designers of the systems that detail firms' histories and policies and practices in management development and career planning; interviews with managers, targets of these systems; and a questionnaire survey. Chapter 1 sketches the themes to be examined. Chapter 2 describes contexts of work organizations in Britain and Japan and the key socioeconomic attributes of the two societies. Chapter 3 profiles the case companies and describes the main contours of their management development systems. Chapter 4 presents the first substantial study findings to compare entry into, and through, managerial labor markets and careers. Career planning, career mobility, and the subjects' experience of these are closely examined. Chapter 5 describes and assesses differences in education and training the managers experienced. Chapter 6 assesses such developmental processes as mentoring and personal development plans and examines the management development functions found in the case organizations. Chapter 7 analyzes managerial target setting, evaluation methods, and rewards. Chapter 8 suggests lessons for practitioners. The book contains 203 references, a description of the sample and methods, a questionnaire, and an index. (Ylb)

"Personnel Management offers an analysis of what is happening in personnel management and a framework within which to understand both present and likely future trends, including the challenges of Europeanization following the UK's signature of the 'social chapter' of the EU Maastricht Treaty and the launch of the critical state of Economic and Monetary Union."--Jacket

European integration and industrial relations : multi-level governance in the making by Paul Marginson( Book )

29 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and held by 345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book comprehensively analyses the impact of continuing European integration on industrial relations, institutions and outcomes. It organizes a body of theoretical and empirical material to sustain its core argument that the governance of industrial relations is increasingly multi-level. Developing relatively autonomously rather than by design, this multi-level framework is the product of responses by a range of national and supranational actors to the challenges of European integration. Cross-national influences are shown to mix with national ones and involve the European sector and company, as well as Community, levels. Competing tendencies towards 'Europeanization', 'Americanization' and 'Re-nationalization' of industrial relations are identified. It is unclear whether EU enlargement will extend or unravel these developments." "Drawing on the authors' extensive record to comparative European research, the book provides an integrated treatment of industrial relations at the EU Community, sector and company levels; examines developments within national systems in the light of European integration; and analyses their interaction with the emerging EU framework. The approach is multi-disciplinary and truly cross-national, integrating the material by theme. It deals with both the theory and also the practice of industrial relations in contemporary Europe."--Jacket
