Leonard Freed : photographs, 1954-1990 by Leonard Freed( Book )

12 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in 4 languages and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For this collection, Brooklyn-born photographer Leonard Freed chose his most powerful images taken during a period of over thirty years spent traveling across continents. The 170 black and white pictures collected here are well worth the wait: the subject matter is sometimes violent and the images often startling, but a deep compassion and lively interest in seemingly every aspect of the human condition are evident in each shot. It is around the theme of 'life and all its emotions' that Freed conceived this anthology, and it balances his commissioned worked with images reflecting a more personal quality. Freed's images are, like those of Boubat, Doisneau, and Cartier-Bresson, full of irony, humor, and pathos. They document black America, neo-Nazis, the Arab-Israeli war, the Romanian revolution, and many other subjects. Stefanie Rosenkranz, a journalist from Stern magazine who has worked with Freed on assignment, contributes a highly personal anecdotal essay

Made in Germany by Leonard Freed( Book )

10 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The American photographer Leonard Freed travelled to Germany for the first time in 1954. Curious and yet from a safe distance, he observed the people in their social surroundings, at work, at street festivals, in public parks, in the streets and against the industrial backdrop of the Ruhr Valley. The Germany he saw was deeply cursed with the effects of war and the NS regime - despite the country's reconstruction, industrial development and economic success. Freed published his extensive report 'Made in Germany' for the first time with Grossman Publishers in New York in 1970. The present reprint accompanies the same-named exhibition at Museum Folkwang in Essen and comes with a booklet providing extra information about Freed's approach and his times. The booklet also contains hitherto unpublished images, documents, and writing by Freed, spanning his fifty years of photographing Germany. Exhibition: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (04.05.-04.08.2013)
