The construction of nationhood : ethnicity, religion, and nationalism by Adrian Hastings( )

47 editions published between 1997 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 2,387 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a thorough re-analysis of both nationalism and nations. It challenges the current 'modernist' orthodoxies of such writers as Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson and Ernest Gellner, and it offers a systematic critique of Hobsbawm's best-selling Nations and Nationalism since 1870. In opposition to books which limit nations and nationalism to the eighteenth century and after, as an aspect of 'modernization', the author argues for a medieval origin to both, dependent upon Biblical religion and the development of vernacular literatures. While theorists of nationhood have paid mostly scant attention to England, the development of the nation-state is seen here as central to the subject, but the analysis is carried forward to embrace many other examples, including Ireland, the South Slavs and modern Africa, before concluding with an overview of the impact of religion, contrasting Islam with Christianity." The Church in Africa : 1450-1950 by Adrian Hastings( )

36 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,995 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christianity provided the constitutive identity of historic Ethiopia. From the sixteenth century, and increasingly from the nineteenth, it entered decisively into the life and culture of an increasing number of other African peoples. In the course of the twentieth century, African Christians have become a major part of the world Church, and arguably modern African history as a whole is not intelligible without its powerful Christian element. Yet despite the great advance in African historiography over the last forty years, this is the first major volume to consider the historical development and character of the Christian Church in Africa as a whole, linking together Ethiopian Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and the numerous 'Independent' churches of modern times. The book focuses throughout on the role of conversion, the shaping of Church life and its relationship to traditional values, and the impact of political power. Professor Hastings also compares the relation of Christian history to the comparable development of Islam in Africa."--Jacket

A history of African Christianity, 1950-1975 by Adrian Hastings( Book )

18 editions published between 1978 and 2009 in English and held by 926 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Counter The churches in Africa probably constitute the most important growth area for Christianity in the second half of the twentieth century. From being a number of rather tightly controlled 'mission fields' zealously guarded by the great missionary societies, Catholic and Protestant, they have emerged across the last decades in bewildering variety to selfhood, a membership of close on a hundred million adherents and an influential role both within their own societies and in the world church. This book surveys the history of Christianity throughout sub-Saharan Africa during the third quarter of this century. It begins in 1950 at a time when the churches were still for the most part emphatically part of the colonial order and it takes the story on from there across the coming of political independence and the transformations of the 1960s and early 1970s
A world history of Christianity( Book )

20 editions published between 1999 and 2007 in English and held by 893 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christianity is the most global of all religions. However, most books on the subject fail to do justice to the history of Christianity outside Europe and North America. This prodigious work provides the first genuinely global one-volume study of the rise, development, and impact of the Christian faith." "Ideally suited for classroom study as well as for independent reading, this volume will serve as the definitive study of Christian history for the coming generation worldwide."--Jacket

Prophet and witness in Jerusalem, a study of the teaching of St. Luke by Adrian Hastings( Book )

12 editions published in 1958 in English and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is intended for all those who are seriously interested in the New Testament, and its aim is to investigate the particular character of one very important part of the latter: the third gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, the two books which we owe to St Luke. Needless to say, this investigation is neither comprehensive nor final; nor is the treatment of all points equally detailed." --
Christianity and the African imagination : essays in honour of Adrian Hastings by David Maxwell( Book )

12 editions published between 2001 and 2013 in English and held by 277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the twentieth-century, Christendom shifted its centre of gravity to the Southern Hemisphere, Africa becoming the most significant area of church growth. This volume explores Christianity's advance across the continent, and its capturing of the African imagination. From the medieval Catholic Kingdom of Kongo to a transnational Pentecostal movement in post-colonial Zimbabwe, the chapters explore how African agents priests and prophets, martyrs and missionaries, evangelists and catechists have seized Christianity and made it theirs. Emphasizing popular religion, the book shows how the Christian ideas and texts, practices and symbols, which have been adapted by Africans, help them accept existential passions and empower them through faith to deal with material concerns for health and wealth, and to overcome evil. The book provides a resource for students across a range of disciplines - history, social anthropology, religious studies, theology, mission studies with particular value for researchers into the socio-political role of third-world Christianity."--Jacket

One and apostolic by Adrian Hastings( Book )

13 editions published in 1963 in English and Undetermined and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is intended as a work of dialogue, even of controversy; yet it is also, I hope, in some sense a work of vision. It is controversial; firstly, because it puts forward a point of view about the Church which may not be acceptable to all even among my unseparated brethren; secondly, because its central part is both an examination and a criticism of the views of many of my separated brethren. I think that in both ways controversial writing is very necessary, and that in the irenic atmosphere of the present there may even be a danger of the second type being neglected." -- Preface
