An essay on typography by Eric Gill( Book )

36 editions published between 1931 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 914 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An Essay on Typography was first published in 1931, instantly recognized as a classic, and has long been unavailable. It represents Gill at his best opinionated, fustian, and consistently humane. It is his only major work on typography and remains indispensable for anyone interested in the art of letter forms and the presentation of graphic information. This manifesto, however, is not only about letters their form, fit, and function but also about man's role in an industrial society. As Gill wrote later, it was his chief object "to describe two worlds that of industrialism and that of the human workman & to define their limits." His thinking about type is still provocative. Here are the seeds of modern advertising unjustified lines, tight word and letter spacing, ample leading. Here, too, is vintage Gill, as polemical as he is practical, as much concerned about the soul of man as the work of man; as much obsessed by the ends as by the means

Wild thing : Epstein, Gaudier-Brzeska, Gill by Richard Cork( Book )

7 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Epstein, Gill and Gaudier-Brzeska were pioneers of modern Bristish sculpture. In a burst of daring creativity before World War I, they revolutionized their field. The three artists produced sculpture whose sexual explicitness and boldness of form shocked contemporary viewers. Examples of their works illustrate this text, including Epstein's robotic masterpiece, 'Rock Drill', Gill's 'Ecstasy' and Gudier-Brzaeska's 'Birds Erect'.--Publisher
The tragedy of Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare( Book )

2 editions published between 1934 and 1949 in English and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Titus Andronicus is still regarded by many as a bad play of dubious authorship. Its adversaries have abhorred the violence of the action and the apparent lapses in the quality of the verse. Since 1945, however, the play has been taken increasingly seriously in both the theatre and the study: the violence and cruelty it depicts were disconcertingly matched by the events of two World Wars. Alan Hughes joins those critics who take the play seriously, arguing for its unity of theme and its grim humour, and demonstrates that it is the work of a brilliant stage craftsman, confident in his mastery of space, movement and verse." "The text is based on the first quarto, supplemented by crucial additions and stage directions from the Folio. The critical account of the play's fortunes is integrated within a description of major modern productions, including those directed by Peter Brook, Brian Bedford and Deborah Warner. In addition there is a complete stage history which includes the eighteenth-century adaptation by Edward Ravenscroft and a reconstruction of the version performed by the nineteenth-century black American actor Ira Aldridge. For this updated edition, a new section is included on recent stage, film and critical interpretations by Sue Hall-Smith. There are also sections on text, authorship and the relevance of the famous Longleat drawing of the play. Appendices explore how the play might have been performed at the Rose playhouse in London, and how it could be adapted for a touring company of fourteen men and boys. An updated reading list completes the edition."--Jacket

A prolific engraver, sculptor, letter-cutter and typographer, Eric Gill (1882 - 1940) chose to be remembered on his grave simply as a stone carver. He carved his first figural sculpture in 1909, and his distinctive, serene figures, such as his famous "Stations of the Cross" carving in Westminster Cathedral, have since become familiar landmarks and also appear in public and private collections throughout the world

Autobiography by Eric Gill( Book )

32 editions published between 1940 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Eric Gill (1882--1940) was an English sculptor, stonemason, typographer, and printmaker. He was also a controversial figure whose fascination with erotica and sex were at odds with his deep religious beliefs. Among his many enduring artistic achievements are the typefaces Gill Sans, Perpetua, and Joanna; the group of sculptures Prospero and Ariel for BBC Broadcasting House; numerous World War I memorials; and a vast array of illustrations for the private Golden Cockerel Press. Originally published in 1940, this autobiography offers an intimate look at Gill's life, work, and highly recognizable style."--Publisher description
