Franklin Delano Roosevelt by Roy Jenkins( Book )

26 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,846 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a statesman whose massive achievements tower over the twentieth century. In a ranking of American presidents, he is rivaled only by George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. He was elected to an unprecedented four terms in office, and his accomplishments in leading the nation through depression and world war resonate to this day." "Roosevelt's presidency was one of the most eventful in U.S. history. He took office in the midst of economic crisis: the stock market had crashed, the banking system had collapsed, and millions of Americans were unemployed. Galvanizing the nation with his 1933 inaugural address and with a flurry of legislation in the First Hundred Days, Roosevelt demonstrated an optimism and resolve that garnered quick support for his administration and for the programs that he called the New Deal. And he was the first president truly to understand the power of the new mass media, rallying the nation through "fireside chats" on the radio and speeches that were the mainstay of movie house newsreels." "Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the dominant president of the twentieth century and helped the United States become the most influential world power. Roy Jenkins's assessment enables us to understand how he accomplished this and why he still stands tall in our estimation today."--Jacket
Gladstone : a biography by Roy Jenkins( Book )

34 editions published between 1995 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,627 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

William Gladstone was, with Tennyson, Newman, Dickens, Carlyle, and Darwin, one of the stars of nineteenth-century British life. He spent 63 of his 89 years in the House of Commons and was prime minister four times, a unique accomplishment. From his critical role in the formation of the Liberal Party to his preoccupation with the cause of Irish Home Rule, he was a commanding politician and statesman nonpareil. But Gladstone the man was much more: a classical scholar, a wide-ranging author, a vociferous participant in all the great theological debates of the day, a voracious reader, and an avid walker who chopped down trees for recreation. He was also a man obsessed with the idea of his own sinfulness. This full and deep portrait of a complicated man offers a sweeping picture of a tumultuous century in British history.--From publisher description

Truman by Roy Jenkins( Book )

29 editions published between 1986 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 1,335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his time, Harry S. Truman was one of the most underrated presidents of the 20th century. Succeeding the charismatic Roosevelt, he was often seen as an uninspiring leader, a poor diplomat and a fumbling politician. He was the first man to authorise the use of nuclear weapons, and was in office at the time when the multiplicity of hopes which arose at the end of the Second World War were inevitably disappointed. Nothing could be further from Roy Jenkins' view of him. This is the first biography of Truman to be written by an author with anything approaching the subject's own range of political experience, and Roy Jenkins brings to this book a quality of appreciation of Truman's political skills which has not been seen before. It is also the first biography to be written by a British author, giving it a new objectivity on the international affairs which occupied so much of Truman's presidency and by which he must be judged

6 editions published in 1965 in English and Undetermined and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, 2nd Baronet PC (4 September 1843 ? 26 January 1911) was an English Liberal and reformist politician. Touted as a future prime minister, his aspirations to higher political office were effectively terminated in 1885, after a notorious and well-publicised divorce case....Dilke's younger brother Ashton Wentworth Dilke married May Eustace Smith, the eldest daughter of Liberal politician and shipowner Thomas Eustace Smith and his wife Ellen in 1876. Sir Charles Dilke became Ellen's lover, a relationship which continued after his marriage in 1884. In July 1885, however, he was accused of seducing the Eustace Smiths' daughter Virginia in the first year of her marriage to Donald Crawford MP. This was supposed to have occurred in 1882 when Virginia was 19, and she claimed that the affair had continued on an irregular basis for the next two and a half years."--Wikipedia

The British liberal tradition : from Gladstone to young Churchill, Asquith, and Lloyd George--is Blair their heir? by Roy Jenkins( Book )

10 editions published between 2001 and 2017 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this wide ranging lecture, Lord Roy Jenkins tells the story of the rise and fall of the British Liberal Party under prime ministers Gladstone, Churchill, Asquith, and Lloyd George, and explores the place of current British prime minister Tony Blair in this tradition. Beginning his address with the Liberal Party's birth in London in 1859, Lord Jenkins discusses the relative success of these prime ministers in dealing with social issues, such as religion and suffrage, and aspects of government legislation including education, foreign policy, and the military. He punctuates this analysis with his views on the personalities of these men, recognizing that the character of leaders naturally shapes their leadership. Of William Ewart Gladstone, for example, Lord Jenkins notes that, while he was 'not necessarily the greatest prime minister, ' Gladstone was 'certainly the most remarkable specimen of humanity ever to inhabit 10 Downing Street.'"--Jacket
