76 editions published between 1795 and 2018 in English and held by 1,004 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Perhaps the last great work of the Enlightenment, this landmark in intellectual history is the Marquis de Condorcet's homage to the human future "emancipated from its chains" and led by "the progress of reason" and "the establishment of liberty". Writing in 1794, while in hiding, under sentence of death from the Jacobins in revolutionary France, Condorcet surveys human history and speculates upon its future. With William Godwin, he is the chief foil of Malthus's Essay on Population. Portrayed by Malthus as an "elate and giddy optimist", Condorcet foresees a future of indefinite progress. Freed from ignorance and superstition, he argues that the human race stands on the threshold of epochal progress and limitless improvement. Condorcet defies modernist stereotypes of the right and the left. He is at once precursor of the free market and social democracy. This new edition of the original 1795 English translation, is the only English translation of a work of Condorcet currently in print

Condorcet : political writings by
Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat Condorcet(
)
7 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 856 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Nicolas de Condorcet (1743-1794), the innovating founder of mathematical thinking in politics, was the last great philosophe of the French Enlightenment and a central figure in the early years of the French Revolution. His political writings give a compelling vision of human progress across world history and express the hopes of that time in the future perfectibility of man. This volume contains a revised translation of 'The Sketch', written while in hiding from the Jacobin Terror, together with lesser-known writings on the emancipation of women, the abolition of slavery, the meanings of freedom and despotism and reflections on revolutionary violence. The introduction by Steven Lukes and Nadia Urbinati sets these works in context and shows why Condorcet is of real interest today as we reinterpret the meaning of Enlightenment, the very idea of progress and the founding ideas of social democracy"--

A commentary and review of Montesquieu's Spirit of laws by
Antoine Louis Claude Destutt de Tracy(
Book
)
60 editions published between 1811 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Montesquieu's political treatise (1752) The Spirit of Laws covers a wide range of topics in politics, law, sociology, and anthropology. Montesquieu advocates constitutionalism and the separation of powers, the abolition of slavery, the preservation of civil liberties and the rule of law, and the idea that political and legal institutions ought to reflect the social and geographical character of each particular community. In the present book, de Tracy brings a scientific approach to explaining the motives, and hence the observed consequences, of various kinds of government styles. He systematically works through many substantial flaws in Montesquieu's work, and delves into Montesquieu's logical gaps. His values of personal liberty, human equality, and intellectual pursuit show through in every chapter. His explanations of economics and how different government organizations do or do not contribute to economic welfare and personal liberty are clever and clear; and he is frank in suggesting that economics as a theoretical subject warrants illumination by others." Essai sur l'application de l'analyse à la probabilité des décisions rendues à la pluralité des voix by
Jean Antoine Nicolas de Caritat Condorcet(
Book
)
50 editions published between 1785 and 2018 in French and English and held by 519 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A central figure in the early years of the French Revolution, Nicolas de Condorcet (1743-94) was active as a mathematician, philosopher, politician and economist. He argued for the values of the Enlightenment, from religious toleration to the abolition of slavery, believing that society could be improved by the application of rational thought. In this essay, first published in 1785, Condorcet analyses mathematically the process of making majority decisions, and seeks methods to improve the likelihood of their success. The work was largely forgotten in the nineteenth century, while those who did comment on it tended to find the arguments obscure. In the second half of the twentieth century, however, it was rediscovered as a foundational work in the theory of voting and societal preferences. Condorcet presents several significant results, among which Condorcet's paradox (the non-transitivity of majority preferences) is now seen as the direct ancestor of Arrow's paradox

Condorcet's paradox by
William V Gehrlein(

4 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 478 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book is a compilation of the research that has been conducted in the study of Condorcet's Paradox for two centuries. It begins with a historical overview of the discovery of Condorcet's Paradox in the 18th Century, provides an exhaustive survey of numerous empirical studies that have been conducted to find actual occurrences of the paradox, and compiles all of the research that has been done to develop mathematical representations for the probability that the paradox will be observed. The book is unique since it focuses attention strictly on this one voting paradox, and it combines all of the different approaches that have been used to study this very interesting phenomenon."--Jacket
