16 editions published in 1978 in English and Undetermined and held by 898 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Andrew Marvell's reputation, for many, rests on a few brilliant lyrics, notably his famous lines "To his coy mistress". Lovely and timeless as these lyrics are, they represent only a portion of his poetry. He was a master of political celebration and satire. By use of dialogue, debate, the imagery of landscape, gardens and music, he richly conveys the tensions and contraditions of hs time. -- Book jacket

Gardens and the picturesque : studies in the history of landscape architecture by John Dixon Hunt( Book )

22 editions published between 1992 and 1997 in English and held by 701 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"John Dixon Hunt is widely considered one of the foremost of today's writers on the history and theory of gardens and landscape architecture. Gardens and the Picturesque collects 11 of Hunt's essays-- several of them never before published-- that deal with the ways in which men and women have given meaning to gardens and landscapes, especially with the ways in which gardens have represented the world of nature 'picturesquely.' Ranging over subjects from the cult of the picturesque to verbal-visual parallels within gardens, from allegorical imagery to landscape painting, these essays brilliantly invoke Hunt's fascination with the idea of the garden both as a milieu - by which gardens become the most eloquent expressions of complex cultural ideas - and as a site of cultural translation, whereby one period shapes for its own purposes the ideas and forms inherited from its predecessors. From Castle Howard in Yorkshire to French impressionist gardens the essays deal with several crucial aspects of the picturesque controversy, how practical applications of the Picturesque taste affected people's treaty with and experience of landscape gardens and even the larger landscape - this last is tracked through the work of the great painter J. M. W. Turner and his talented commentator, John Ruskin, as well as through the garden designs of Humphry Repton and the lingering debts to the picturesque movement that haunt modernist theory. The book concludes with a consideration of the utopian aspirations and views of the garden in different societies"--Publisher's description

"From imposing sculptures discovered in woodlands or on hilly trails to community gardens, and along disused rail tracks to ones made on inhospitable seashores, this book offers insights into the history and make-up of contemporary gardens, whether they reflect the priorities of modern society, bring new ideas and materials into the world, or seek the reinvention of ancient cultures. The modern botanical gardens, sculpture parks, campuses, memorial gardens and vernacular gardens examined showcase the differences between cultures and countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the United States, China and Australia"--Jacket

Greater perfections : the practice of garden theory by John Dixon Hunt( Book )

24 editions published between 1999 and 2004 in English and held by 445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"If gardening is most usually thought of as a practical activity, John Dixon Hunt's book explores the theoretical or conceptual basis of garden art." "Greater Perfections explores the meanings of "garden" and its relationship to other interventions into the natural world. It looks at the role of verbal and visual languages in place-making, as well as the fashion in which gardens have been represented in the visual and literary arts. But above all, it offers a new and challenging account of the role of representation in garden art itself."--Jacket
The picturesque garden in Europe by John Dixon Hunt( Book )

23 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in English and German and held by 402 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The "picturesque" or "natural" garden became the rage in 18th-century Europe. Largely created in England, it was exported to other countries, which strove to adapt its forms to local conditions. This is the first book about that famous episode in garden history to look at the larger, European map of landscape design. It surveys a wide range of sites, the contributions to their creation by both amateurs and professionals and the dialogue between practical place-making and the theoretical formulations that began with Alexander Pope and Joseph Addison. The picturesque garden in France had its own direction even while it looked to England and China for inspiration and the French produced a crop of essays on the new "modern" garden as well as a set of astonishing designs that were wholly and distinctly French. The book surveys the impact of English and French design on other countries, in particular Sweden, the German-speaking lands and Russia. This is a scholarly and essential book for garden designers as well as being a beautiful one

The Italian garden : art, design, and culture by John Dixon Hunt( Book )

15 editions published between 1996 and 2009 in English and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Italian gardens vary widely according to their historical date and geographic location. This collection approaches Italian gardens of all periods, from the middle ages to modern times, and it ranges widely throughout the peninsula, from Genoa to Sicily, the Veneto to Liguria, and Ferrara to Florence." "The authors are a distinguished group of Italian, American, English and German scholars, with different backgrounds in art history, literature, architecture, planning, and cultural history. The explorations of the subject from these different perspectives illuminate not only their own disciplines, but are concerned to make many fresh connections between garden art and the politics of nationalism, between the art of gardens and urban infrastructure, between cultural movements like freemasonry and site planning, between design and planting materials. The book offers therefore a narrative of the garden by selecting ten high points of its history, which are introduced with a consideration by the volume editor of the fresh challenges to contemporary Italian garden history."--Jacket
