Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition asthe Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It isrestricted to one field that of mathematics and an age limitof 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the mainbeen interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonablesince major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been)recognized with Nobel Prizes

SRC/LMS Research Symposium on Representations of Lie Groups(
)
16 editions published between 1979 and 1980 in English and held by 1,238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Lie groups and their representations occupy an important place in mathematics with applications in such diverse fields as differential geometry, number theory, differential equations and physics. In 1977 a symposium was held in Oxford to introduce this rapidly developing and expanding subject to nonspecialists. This volume contains the lectures of ten distinguished mathematicians designed to provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the fundamental theory and appreciate the range of results. This volume contains much to interest mathematicians and theoretical physicists from advanced undergraduate level upwards

The geometry and dynamics of magnetic monopoles by
Michael Francis Atiyah(
Book
)
19 editions published between 1988 and 2016 in English and held by 737 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Systems governed by nonlinear differential equations are of fundamental importance in all branches of science, but our understanding of them is still extremely limited. In this book a particular system, describing the interaction of magnetic monopoles, is investigated in detail. The use of new geometrical methods produces a reasonably clear picture of the dynamics for slowly moving monopoles. This picture clarifies the important notion of solitons, which has attracted much attention in recent years. The soliton idea bridges the gap between the concepts of "fields" and "particles," and is here explored in a fully threedimensional context. While the background and motivation for the work comes from physics, the presentation is mathematical. This book is interdisciplinary and addresses concerns of theoretical physicists interested in elementary particles or general relativity and mathematicians working in analysis or geometry. The interaction between geometry and physics through nonlinear partial differential equations is now at a very exciting stage, and the book is a contribution to this activity. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest printondemand technology to again make available previously outofprint books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

The geometry and physics of knots by
Michael Francis Atiyah(
Book
)
29 editions published between 1990 and 2004 in English and held by 661 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
These notes arise from lectures presented in Florence under the auspices of the Accadamia dei Lincee and deal with an area that lies at the crossroads of mathematics and physics. The material presented here rests primarily on the pioneering work of Vaughan Jones and Edward Witten relating polynomial invariants of knots to a topological quantum field theory in 2+1 dimensions. Professor Atiyah here presents an introduction to Witten's ideas from the mathematical point of view. The book will be essential reading for all geometers and gauge theorists as an exposition of new and interesting ideas in a rapidly developing area

Miscellanea mathematica by
Michael Francis Atiyah(
Book
)
13 editions published in 1991 in English and German and held by 354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mathematics has a certain mystique, for it is pure and ex act, yet demands remarkable creativity. This reputation is reinforced by its characteristic abstraction and its own in dividual language, which often disguise its origins in and connections with the physical world. Publishing mathematics, therefore, requires special effort and talent. Heinz Gotze, who has dedicated his life to scientific pu blishing, took up this challenge with his typical enthusi asm. This Festschrift celebrates his invaluable contribu tions to the mathematical community, many of whose leading members he counts among his personal friends. The articles, written by mathematicians from around the world and coming from diverse fields, portray the important role of mathematics in our culture. Here, the reflections of important mathematicians, often focused on the history of mathematics, are collected, in recognition of Heinz Gotze's lifelong support of mathematics

Art in the life of mathematicians by
Michael Francis Atiyah(
Book
)
5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Why are mathematicians drawn to art? How do they perceive it? What motivates them to pursue excellence in music or painting? Do they view their art as a conveyance for their mathematics or an escape from it? What are the similarities between mathematical talent and creativity and their artistic equivalents? What are the differences? Can a theatrical play or a visual image capture the beauty and excitement of mathematics? Some of the world's top mathematicians are also accomplished artists: musicians, photographers, painters, dancers, writers, filmmakers. In this volume, they share some of their work and reflect on the roles that mathematics and art have played in their lives. They write about creativity, communication, making connections, negotiating successes and failures, and navigating the vastly different professional worlds of art and mathematics.From publisher description

6 editions published between 2002 and 2012 in English and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
By the age of 23, he had laid the foundations for calculus, the laws of gravity, motion and inertia, and begun experiments on light. His major work is called 'The Principia'. Isaac Newton has been called the Father of Modern Science. His incredible body of work represents arguably the greatest contribution to science ever made by an individual. But despite living at the vibrant center of an inspired social scene, his personal life was marked by loneliness. Examine the many discoveries and private fears of this remarkable man

Sir Michael Atiyah is currently the Master of Trinity College Cambridge and Director of the Issac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences. After initial studies in Cambridge he moved to Oxford where he spent the next thirty years, except for a four year stay at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has worked in many fields of mathematics including geometry, topology, differential equations and theoretical physics. He received the Fields Medal in Moscow in 1966. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1962 and served as President from 19901995. Vijay Kumar Patodi was a brilliant Indian mathematicians who made, during his short life, fundamental contributions to the analytic proof of the index theorem and to the study of differential geometric invariants of manifolds. This set of collected papers edited by Prof M. Atiyah and Prof Narasimhan includes his pathbreaking papers on the McKeanSinger conjecture and the analytic proof of RiemannRochHirzebruch theorem for Kahler manifolds. It also contains his celebrated joint papers on the index theorem and the AtiyahPatodiSinger invariant
