Elements of statistical mechanics by
D. ter Haar(
)
82 editions published between 1954 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,968 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The purpose of this book is to bring together in one volume the body of information on the theory and practice of engine testing and test plant design to which any engineer responsible for work of this kind must have access. The current concern with environmental matters has given a fresh impetus to the development of the internal combustion engine. Test procedures are becoming ever more complex and demanding. This presents a challenge to the test and development engineer, since while mastering these new techniques they must still have at their finger tips all the traditional skills associated with engine testing. Such basic matters as the mounting of the engine, coupling it to the dynamometer and dealing with the exhaust can give rise to intractable problems, misleading results and, on occasion, to disastrous accidents. This book, essentially practical in nature, will meet this need

The old quantum theory by
D. ter Haar(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 544 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Old Quantum Theory explains how the classical laws were modified by Planck, Einstein, Rutherford, Bohr, and other contributors to account for atomic phenomena, comprising the development of quantum theory from its start at the very end of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. This book begins by discussing Planck's discovery of his radiation law, followed by Einstein's introduction to quanta. Next is a description of the Rutherford model of the atom and Bohr's postulates, which are confirmed by the Franck-Hertz experiment. This selection concludes with a description of how Bohr's theory could explain the main features of the atomic spectra. A brief summary of other important developments in the period are also elaborated. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on the history of quantum mechanics from the 1900s to the development of wave mechanics

Lectures on non-linear plasma kinetics by
V. N T︠S︡ytovich(
Book
)
6 editions published in 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Lectures on Nonlinear Plasma Kinetics" is an introduction to modern non-linear plasma physics showing how many of the techniques of modern non-linear physics find applications in plasma physics and how, in turn, the results of this research find applications in astrophysics. Emphasis is given to explaining the physics of nonlinear processes and the radical change of cross-sections by collective effects. The author discusses new nonlinear phenomena involving the excitation of coherent nonlinear structures and the dynamics of their random motions in relation to new self-organization processes. He also gives a detailed description of applications of the general theory to various research fields, including the interaction of powerful radiation with matter, collective laser particle accelerators, controlled thermonuclear research, space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics
