Energy; a crisis in power by
John P Holdren(
Book
)
6 editions published between 1971 and 1973 in English and held by 478 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The demand of Americans for more and more power, particularly electric power, contrasted by the deep and growing concern for the environment and a desire by private citizens to participate in the public decisions that affect the environment is the dilemma explored in this book. Part One by John Holdren, offers a scientist's overview of the energy crisis, examining the sources and consumption of energy in the United States. He considers fossil fuels, hydroelectric energy, nuclear fission, energy use, thermal pollution, climate, tomorrow's energy supply, and some aspects of the demand, describing how production of power inevitably leaves its mark upon the environment. Part Two by Philip Herrera, reports a journalist's account of remarkable efforts by concerned citizens to protect the environment from the effects of power-activated air, water, and landscape pollution. Case studies of some of the major recent controversies over the placement and operation of power plants are given, summarizing their conflicts and resolutions. Together, the author's observations and recommendations raise hope that the United States can find a rational solution to its energy crisis. (Bl)

Building global security through cooperation : annals of Pugwash 1989 by
Joseph Rotblat(
Book
)
6 editions published between 1990 and 2014 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
1989 was by any standards an extraordinary year: the year in which the Cold War ended. However, although much has changed, much remains unresolved or not changed at all. Even though the rationale for the huge military forces has been removed from the East-West relationship, these forces still retain a tremendous potential to do harm. Moreover, threats to peace may grow along North-South and South-South axes. An example of such a threat is the rapid growth in size and sophistication of military arsenals in the South. The contributions to this volume make it clear that the problems of East and West, North and South are inter- twined. Security can be gained only through cooperation. The contributors, who come from widely differing geographical, cultural and political backgrounds, all share the Pugwash tradition of scientific objectivity

The goals of the Caltech Population Program are to increase understanding of the interrelationships between population growth and socioeconomic and cultural patterns throughout the world and to communicate this understanding. This series of occasional papers is one step in the process of communicating research results. The papers deal primarily with problems of population growth and the interaction of population change with such variables as resources, food supply, environment, urbanization, employment, economic development, and social and cultural values. This fourth paper in the series concentrates on the consequences of population growth in the United States. The author presents the position that the American population should be stabilized or even reduced. Reasons for this belief, as well as possible methods and their liabilities, are discussed. (LS)
