Dorothea Lange naît à Hoboken, dans le New Jersey, en 1895. Installe à San Fransisco en 1919, elle ouvre un studio de portraitiste et devient bientôt la photographe préférée d'une bourgeoisie riche et influente tant sur le plan politique que culturel. Ce n'est qu'à partir de 1932, la période la plus critique de la crise économique, qu'elle réalise les premières de ses photographies documentaires qui vont lui assurer u renom international. Quittant son studio, elle photographie les grèves de marins, les manifestations du 1er mai, les hommes sans travail, et ces armées de migrants qui battent la semelle autour des soupes populaires ou dorment devant les bureaux de travail. Publiées et exposées, ses photographies attirent l'attention de Roy Stryker, responsable de la Farm Security Administration, qui vient de lancer un programme de documentation photographique sur l'Amérique de la crise économique. De 1935 à 1939, Lang est employée par la FSA, sillonne l'Amérique, visite pratiquement tous les Etats, s'entretient avec d'innombrables familles démunies qu'elle photographie. Avec Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, Russell Lee et d'autres, elle constitue une documentation sociologique qui éclaire notre vision de l'Amérique des années 1930. A la fin de sa vie, elle emporte bien sûr son appareil lorsqu'elle accompagne son époux, l'anthropologue Paul Taylor, en Amérique du Sud, Afrique du Nord, Europe et Asie. En 1966, quelques mois après sa mort, le Museum of Modern Art de New York lui rend hommage en exposant une rétrospective de son ?uvre
