"2019 marque le cinquantième anniversaire de la mort de Louise de Vilmorin, le 26 décembre 1969. On connaît l'auteur de Madame de et de Julietta, mais l'édition de sa correspondance n'a été entreprise qu'à partir des années deux mille. Il manquait à l'édifice déjà publié les lettres échangées avec Jean Hugo, arrière-petit-fils de Victor Hugo, lui-même peintre, décorateur de théâtre et illustrateur, qui eut une grande influence sur son oeuvre. Cinq cent vingt-six lettres ont été réunies dans le présent volume, entre 1935 (date de la rencontre de Louise et de Jean) et 1954 (date de la parution de L'Alphabet des aveux, qui constitue leur oeuvre commune). La correspondance ainsi éditée permet de préciser la chronologie de leur relation, mais également de mener plusieurs réflexions sur le genre épistolaire et la manière dont, dans la lettre, on s'adresse à l'autre et dont on exprime ses sentiments, notamment amoureux. Au fil de ses lettres, Louise de Vilmorin distille également quelques-uns de ses souvenirs d'enfance et, en septembre 1948, elle entreprit d'y raconter ses mémoires. Enfin, la correspondance témoigne de la genèse de l'oeuvre, puisqu'il s'agit d'une période d'intense création littéraire : Madame de et Julietta bien sûr, mais également poèmes et figures de style, écrits principalement à Alpbach en Autriche et à Sélestat dans le Bas-Rhin. Par ses conseils, ses lectures et ses dessins, Jean Hugo contribua à faire de Louise de Vilmorin la poétesse que l'on connaît, mais également une épistolière de grand talent."--Page 4 de la couverture
