Select charters and other illustrations of English constitutional history, from the earliest times to the reign of Edward the First by William Stubbs( Book )

2 editions published between 1884 and 1895 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

William Stubbs (1825-1901), one of the leading historians of his generation, pursued his academic research alongside his work as a clergyman. He was elected Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1866 and appointed a bishop in 1884. Stubbs was a major figure in medieval English historiography, with special interests in legal and constitutional history. This work was first published in 1870. It begins with an outline of English constitutional history, which he urged should be part of the curriculum, and then presents documents from Roman times up to the thirteenth century. Eight editions followed in Stubbs' lifetime, and it became a core textbook. The ninth edition of 1913, revised by H. W. C. Davis (1874-1928), is reissued here, and contains better editions and translations of Anglo-Saxon and French texts than were available in Stubbs' lifetime, as well as some then newly discovered material and an updated glossary

Year books of the reign of King Edward the First by Great Britain( Book )

3 editions published between 1863 and 1964 in English and Latin and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The records of the medieval English courts were compiled into manuscript 'year books', organised by regnal year of the monarch. The year books for the regnal years 20-2 and 30-5 of Edward I (1239-1307) were edited for the Rolls Series by Alfred Horwood (1821-81), and published in five volumes between 1863 and 1879, with translations provided for the Anglo-Norman text. Horwood notes that the quantity of cases is surprising given the size of the population. He attributes this to confidence among the people in the king's justice, but also points out that the law's delays during this period were notorious, and that in 1289 the king had effectively purged most of his judges on the grounds of corruption. This volume, published in 1879, contains cases from the four law terms of the years 1305-7, ending at the death of Edward I
Leal conselheiro; e, Livro da ensinança de bem cavalgar toda sela by Duarte( Book )

2 editions published in 1973 in Portuguese and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Leal conselheiro (Loyal counselor) is a book written by Edward, King of Portugal (1433-1438). The book is a treatise on ethics and morals intended to be read by members of the court. It is believed that the king compiled the work around 1438, the year of his death. In the prologue, Edward indicates that the work is a compilation of written notes made throughout his life. The king also says in the prologue that the work is a "ABC of loyalty," and it should be like a handbook of ethical guidance for the monarchy and other members of the nobility, drawing on themes as diverse as marriage and family life, the sins, addictions and enhancing the feeling and virtues. The book lacks a rigid structure, observing over its 103 chapters a series of reflections of moral character and ethics held by the king on several occasions about various issues, including letters and "advice" to his family members, such as a letter to his brother, Prince Pedro, in 1425. Despite this relative lack of unity of structure that departs from traditional moral treatises, the work displays, by the plain language and conversational intimate tone, the character and deep thoughts of Edward
