Jacques-Louis David : empire to exile by Philippe Bordes( Book )

13 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 706 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This beautifully illustrated book, focusing on a selection of later paintings and drawings by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), is published to accompany the first major exhibition of the artist's work in the United States. Organized by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and the J. Paul Getty Museum, this exhibition of twenty-seven paintings and twenty-nine drawings is also the first to examine the transformation of David's art during the post-revolutionary period (1800-1825), in particular his work produced during the empire of Napoleon I and the decade of David's exile in Brussels following the Bourbon restoration. Art historian Philippe Bordes establishes David's position after the Terror and discusses the artist's admiration for Napoleon Bonaparte, for whom he served as court painter. The book also investigates David's new approach to antiquity in historical compositions and the avowed influence of the Flemish School on his practice. The paintings ans drawings in this volume demonstrate the full range of David's art in the nineteenth century: grand official images of Napoleon and his courtiers; intimate portraits of the artist's friends and family; imposing mythological and classical subject pictures; study drawings for paintings; and finished drawings made for their own sake. Each of the works, many of which were previously unknown or inaccessible. is reproduced in color and accompanied by an entry with complete scholarly information. Drawing on many new documents and close analysis of the works featured in the book, Bordes offers a revised understanding of this deeply reactive artist and the creative output of his second career." -- Publisher's description
Necklines : the art of Jacques-Louis David after the Terror by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth( Book )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Twice imprisoned after the fall of Robespierre, French painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) faced an artistic and personal crisis as the political and cultural values he had embraced crumbled in the mid-1790s. This book examines the crucial period of David's artistic career as he struggled both to "save his neck" and to recast his identity in the aftermath of the Reign of Terror. Ewa Lajer-Burcharth examines David's work in the context of the larger cultural and social formations emerging in France and offers a new perspective on his paintings and on French artistic culture at an important point in its history."--Jacket

David and neo-classicism by Sophie Monneret( Book )

7 editions published between 1998 and 2004 in English and French and held by 356 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David was a product of the academic tradition, yet by the end of the 18th century he was an established master of the avant-garde. His work represents a turning point in the history of painting; an incomparable technical master, he was also a profoundly political artist. How could these qualities combine in the one man? Through her analysis of David's life and work, Sophie Monneret brings us closer to this various and paradoxical artist."--Jacket

"Well-known specialists in art history, gender studies, French literature, and aesthetics address a wide range of issues and problems pertaining to the intersection of art and culture that have profound implications for artistic and historical developments in late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century France and Europe. The essays present new historical, archival, and interpretative material from diverse methodological vantage points in clear and lucid prose that makes the volume particularly accessible to a broader public interested in learning more about the artist and his time. The text is complemented by seventeen black-and-white plates and fifty-five figures."--Jacket

"The work of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), along with that of Nicolas Poussin and Paul Cezanne, probably represents one of the three great turning points in the evolution of French art. A man of the Enlightenment but equally nurtured by the moral examples of classical literature, he altered the course of the pictorial school of his day, and more than any other stands for the particular form of a "return to order" that characterises French Neoclassicism." "Draughtsmanship was instrumental in that evolution; beholding antique ruins for the first time during his two stays in Rome, David constantly drew in his sketchbooks and albums, inventing an original graphic style, accurate and sharp. He was equally rigorous in the preparatory drawings for his great pre-Revolutionary compositions (The Oath of the Horatii, Brutus), as, subsequently, in the huge scenographies dedicated to Napoleon's epic exploits." "The Louvre holds the most important collection of David's drawings in the world, with two of the twelve Roman albums, in which the artist assembled his travel recollections, as well as eight sketchbooks, where, page after page, we can follow the genesis of such famous compositions as The Sacre or The Distribution of the Eagle Standards. Outstanding among the individual drawings is the most famous icon of the Revolutionary period, the large drawing for The Oath of the Jeu de Paume, a valuable testimony of a project that was never carried out, along with utterly candid studies for portraits and figures that are evidence of the political evolution of a painter who was also a committed actor in the history of his time."--BOOK JACKET
