Play, dreams and imitation in childhood by Jean Piaget( Book )

9 editions published between 1951 and 1972 in English and held by 513 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Piaget's work is a cornerstone in development. His writing is long and laborious. He takes six pages to tell us that a 2 month old exhibits imitation behaviors. He was not an expert in parsimony. In his defense the translation from French is a bit awkward. What French I can read, of his work it is smoother than this translation. Case study gold, quoted as fact as if he had done something more significant than watch his own children and write down their behavior. No experimentally designed trials here. It's funny the same people and institutions who tout his great methods of research criticize Freud for his exact same research method: the case study. Many devout Piaget loyalists have never even read his original work. They've only been exposed to his work by text books in class. For this reason alone, I urge everyone to read as much source material as possible. Piaget is no exception. Get it, read it, make your own interpretation. Love it or hate it, you'll be wiser for the effort"--Amazon.com

Teaching foreign languages in schools the silent way by Caleb Gattegno( Book )

40 editions published between 1963 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This revision of a previous edition discusses an approach to language teaching called the Silent Way. This method is based on the notion that learning a foreign language is in many respects radically different from learning the mother tongue. It can be learned in the schools by artificial methods and with materials designed for the purpose. The techniques in the Silent Way make it possible for the teacher to say less and the students to say more as the lessons advance. The specific subjects covered in this book are: (1) the subordination of teaching to learning in the case of foreign languages; (2) the spirit of a language -- its structure, and the literature and philosophy of the group using it; (3) the distinction between language and vocabulary and the idea that much language use can go on with a small functional vocabulary; (4) a discussion of materials for vocabulary development; and (5) a discussion of results one might expect and an exposition of the rationale for this method. An appendix contains ten testimonials to the method by teachers who used it in teaching several languages. (AMH)

The common sense of teaching foreign languages by Caleb Gattegno( Book )

15 editions published between 1976 and 2010 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Silent Way is a philosophy of foreign language teaching which emphasizes the importance of allowing learners to use their natural learning resources. This volume provides practical guidelines in connection with the following chapters: (1) "Freeing the Students"; (2) "The Most Basic Component"; (3) "The Next Step"; (4) "Perception"; (5) "Independence, Autonomy and Responsibility"; (6) "Uses of Rods and Charts"; (7) "Exploiting the Functional Vocabulary"; (8) "Reading and Writing in the New Language"; (9) "Expansion of Vocabulary"; (10) "Evaluating Progress"; (11) "Short Passages and Stories." The first step allows the students to concentrate on how words and sentences should sound in the target language. The second is to teach the language's numerical system, as students are familiar with their own. Colored rods and charts are used to illustrate various forms of the language, to build vocabulary and sentence structure, and for reading and writing instruction. Further vocabulary building is accomplished through the use of illustrations and worksheets. Measures of proficiency inherent in the Silent Way provide continuous feedback and assessment of students' progress. As an introduction to literature in the target language, two texts are suggested: "Short Passages," written for students of the Silent Way; and "Eight Tales," a short collection of short stories. Appendices contain sample sentences for word charts in French, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin. (Am)
