4 editions published in 1922 in English and held by 227 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Melville spent much of the last 40 years of his life writing poetry in relative obscurity. Many of his poems were published in small, limited editions and remained largely unread until Henry Chapin assembled this posthumous collection in the 1920s. These poems show Melville employing the same frothy language and dense, layered metaphors for which his prose works are famous. Many contain Melville's familiar nautical themes, but Chapin also includes several poems Melville wrote to commemorate the Civil War. The volume also includes two selections from Melville?s epic poem "Clarel."
