The growth and maintenance of linguistic complexity by Östen Dahl( )

24 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 1,841 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book studies linguistic complexity and the processes by which it arises and is maintained, focusing not so much on what one can say in a language as how it is said. Complexity is not seen as synonymous with ""difficulty"" but as an objective property of a system -- a measure of the amount of information needed to describe or reconstruct it. Grammatical complexity is the result of historical processes often subsumed under the rubric of grammaticalization and involves what can be called mature linguistic phenomena, that is, features that take time to develop. The nature and characteristics of such processes are discussed in detail, as well as the external and internal factors that favor or disfavor stability and change in language."

The area around the Baltic Sea has for millennia been a meeting-place for people of different origins. Among the circum-Baltic languages, we find three major branches of Indo-European Baltic, Germanic, and Slavic, the Baltic-Finnic languages from the Uralic phylum and several others. The circum-Baltic area is an ideal place to study areal and contact phenomena in languages. The present set of two volumes look at the circum-Baltic languages from a typological, areal and historical perspective, trying to relate the intricate patterns of similarities and dissimilarities to the societal background. In Volume I, surveys of dialect areas and language groups bear witness to the immense linguistic diversity in the area with special attention to less well-known languages and language varieties and their contacts

Logic in linguistics by Jens S Allwood( Book )

65 editions published between 1977 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 776 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An elementary introduction to formal logic, particularly intended for linguists and others interested in languages. Concepts and theories developed within formal logic for the study of artificial languages have for some time been fruitfully applied to the study of natural languages and some knowledge of them is necessary for students of linguists (especially semantics). With this need in mind the authors offer a clear, succinct and basic introduction to set theory, inference, propositional and predicate logic, deduction, modal and intensional logic, and various concomitant extensions of these. There is a discussion too of the relation between linguistics and logical analysis and between logic and natural language. The authors see increasing scope for co-operation between logicians and linguistics in studying the structure of language, and it is the overall aim of the book to promote this co-operation
Tense and Aspect in the Languages of Europe : Tense and Aspect in the Languages of Europe by Typology of Languages in Europe Staff( )

3 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and held by 460 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume puts the European tense-aspect systems in a consistent typological and diachronic perspective. The book advances our understanding of the dynamics of tense and aspect systems, how they develop over time, and how this is reflected in the rich patterns of synchronic variation and their areal distribution

Grammaticalization in the North noun phrase morphosyntax in Scandinavian vernaculars by Östen Dahl( )

14 editions published in 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book looks at some phenomena within the grammar of the noun phrase in a group of traditional North Germanic varieties mainly spoken in Sweden and Finland, usually seen as Swedish dialects, although the differences between them and Standard Swedish are often larger than between the latter and the other standard Mainland Scandinavian languages. In addition to being conservative in many respects - e.g. in preserving nominal cases and subject-verb agreement - these varieties also display many innovative features. These include extended uses of definite articles, incorporation of attributive adjectives, and a variety of possessive constructions. Although considerable attention has been given to these phenomena in earlier literature, this book is the first to put them in the perspective of typology and grammaticalization processes. It also looks for a plausible account of the historical origin of the changes involved, arguing that many of them spread from central Sweden, where they were later reverted due to the influence from prestige varieties coming from southern Scandinavia

"Research on language universals and research on linguistic typology are not antagonistic, but rather complementary approaches to the same fundamental problem: the relationship between the amazing diversity of languages and the profound unity of language. Only if the true extent of typological divergence is recognized can universal laws be formulated. In recent years it has become more and more evident that a broad range of languages of radically different types must be carefully analysed before general theories are possible. Typological comparison of this kind is now at the centre of linguistic research. With the series EMPIRICAL APPROACHES TO LANGUAGE TYPOLOGY, Mouton de Gruyter has created a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. The distinctive feature of this series is its markedly empirical orientation. All conclusions to be reached are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. General problems are focused on from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of phenomena from little known languages, which shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics. The series is open to contributions from different theoretical persuasions. It thus reflects the methodological pluralism that characterizes the present situation. Care is taken that all volumes be accessible to every linguist and, moreover, to every reader specializing in some domain related to human language. A deeper understanding of human language in general, based on a detailed analysis of typological diversity among individual languages, is fundamental for many sciences, not only for linguists. Therefore, this collection will soon prove indispensable in every research library, be it public or private, which has a specialization in language and the language sciences."
