"The Sociology of Early Buddhism tells how and why the early monks were able to exploit the social and political conditions of mid-first millennium northeastern India in such a way as to ensure the growth of Buddhism into a major world religion. Its readership lies both within Buddhist studies and more widely among historians, sociologists and anthropologists of religion."--Jacket
Conceiving the goddess : transformation and appropriation in Indic religions by Jayant Bhalchandra Bapat( )

16 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 751 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Conceiving the Goddess is an exploration of goddess cults in South Asia that embodies research on South Asian goddesses in various disciplines. The theme running through all the contributions, with their multiple approaches and points of view, is the concept of appropriation, whereby one religious group adopts a religious belief or practice not formerly its own. What is the motivation behind this? Are such actions attempts to dominate, or to resist the domination of others, or to adapt to changing social circumstances - or perhaps simply to enrich the religious experience of a group's members? In examining these questions, Conceiving the Goddess considers a range of settings: a Jain goddess lurking in a Brahminical temple, the fraught relationship between the humble Camar caste and the river goddess Ganga, the mutual appropriation of disciple and goddess in the tantric exercises of Kashmiri Saivism, and the alarming self-decapitation of the fierce goddess Chinnamasta

India seen from the East : Indian and indigenous cults in Champa by Paul Mus( Book )

10 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Paul Mus (1902-69), a historian of religion in India and ancient Southeast Asia, has had profound influence on generations of scholars. India seen from the east draws upon his fieldwork among the Cham people of Vietnam, remnants of a society that had once boasted a flourishing Indian-style culture, but came to be known only through ruins, religious sculptures and fractured folk memories. This is perhaps the most influential of Mus's publications, and vividly justifies his conviction that, in the eyes of the Chams, 'folk' and 'Indian' were one and the same"--Back cover

A history of state and religion in India by Ian Copland( Book )

3 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Offering the first long-duration analysis of the relationship between the state and religion in South Asia, this book looks at the nature and origins of Indian secularism. It interrogates the proposition that communalism in India is wholly a product of colonial policy and modernisation, questions whether the Indian state has generally been a benign, or disruptive, influence on public religious life, and evaluates the claim that the region has spawned a culture of practical toleration. The book is structured around six key arenas of interaction between state and religion: cow worship and sacrifice, control of temples and shrines, religious festivals and processions, proselytising and conversion, communal riots, and religious teaching/doctrine and family law. It offers a challenging argument about the role of the state in religious life in a historical continuum, and identifies points of similarity and contrast between periods and regimes. The book makes a significant contribution to the literature on South Asian History and Religion
