In Visions of the Dusk, poet Fenton Johnson begins to incorporate Negro spirituals into his work, reflecting the traditional styles of Negro poetry from which the poet would eventually move away. It is also full of the hopelessness found in his work that James Weldon Johnson claimed "voiced the disillusionment and bitterness of feeling the Negro race was then experiencing."
Songs of the soil by Fenton Johnson( Book )

9 editions published between 1916 and 1998 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As Fenton Johnson states in the introduction to his third collection of verse, Songs of the Soil is intended to "represent Negro life in the rural districts of the South." Johnson uses traditional poetic structures, rhyme and dialect of earlier Negro poetry. When read in conjunction with his other volumes, Johnson's progression from writing the conventional style poems in Songs of the Soil to writing the new poetry of the American Modernist movement in "Tired" can be more readily seen
