These three volumes of Kentucky election statistics at last make this basic tool of political research easily accessible to scholars, journalists, teachers, political candidates and others interested in primary and general election returns. In Kentucky, as in many other states, these figures have been available only in the Secretary of State's office, and there has been no compilation of percentages and pluralities necessary for comparative purposes. The source of all the statistics in these volumes is the official records in the office of the Secretary of State in Frankfort, Kentucky. All retu
The legislative process in the United States by Malcolm E Jewell( Book )

42 editions published between 1966 and 1986 in English and held by 1,630 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, when it was first published 20 years ago, was received with some reservations since it made a comparative study of legislative processes in the United States at the federal and state levels--an enterprise thought to be not viable given the unique characteristics of each state legislature and the American Congress. Over the last 20 years, however, these reservations have disappeared and there is growing recognition of the value of the comparative study. This fourth edition of the book has been completely rewritten and made concise. Special attention has been given to the growth of the independent influence of the individual member, a recent trend. More important, the structural-functional systems analysis, which provided a theoretical framework for the earlier editions, has been abandoned in favor of an approach that is more effective in helping students understand the operation of the American legislative process. Representation in state legislatures by Malcolm E Jewell( )

11 editions published between 1982 and 2015 in English and held by 1,201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Outlines how state legislators perceive their positions and how they attempt to carry out their duties. Data is derived from in-depth interviews with 220 house members in nine states. Legislators provided information about their perceptions of current problems, services provided for individual constituents, and ways policy matters were resolved. The author suggests that American state legislatures are becoming more institutionalized and more stable as fewer members retire and more are reelected

Political parties and primaries in Kentucky by Penny M Miller( )

7 editions published between 1990 and 2015 in English and held by 909 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a study of Kentucky political parties: how they are organized and how they nominate and elect candidates. Because state politics in Kentucky is dominated by the Democratic Party, a major portion of the study is devoted to the Democratic primary candidates, campaign techniques, funding, of elections, and voting patterns. As in other slates, campaign techniques in Kentucky are changing. During the 1950s and 1960s the Democratic Party had two dominant factions, and candidates for statewide office sought factional allies among local party organizations. Now factional alignments have disappe
The politics of reapportionment by Malcolm E Jewell( Book )

22 editions published between 1962 and 2017 in English and held by 797 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The issue of apportionment is one of the most important problems facing citizens of most of the states in America. It underlies many other problems of state government. Growing judicial concern with apportionment is evidence of a failure of the political process in many states. A political solution to the problem requires better understanding and more accurate information about apportionment, which may be found in The Politics of Reapportionment. Understanding the politics of apportionment may be broken down into four parts: What are the political factors that have caused the various states to follow differing courses in apportionment? What are the political consequences of these differences in apportionment? When a legislature is grappling with any reapportionment problem, what roles are played by the various political groups involved? What are the consequences of transferring this controversy out of the legislative arena?Jewell notes that a study of legislative apportionment is essential to an understanding of any representative system of government. In the U.S. the patterns of apportionment have vitally affected the nature of our state and national political institutions, and our political history has been marked by a number of colorful struggles over this issue. For these reasons, American political scientists have devoted more attention to apportionment than to many other problems of government."--Provided by publisher

The Kentucky legislature : two decades of change by Malcolm E Jewell( )

8 editions published between 1988 and 2015 in English and held by 565 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twenty years ago the Kentucky General Assembly was one of the least powerful and least effective legislatures in the country, almost entirely dominated by the governor. Over the past two decades the legislature has changed -- gradually and with little public attention -- into a far more powerful, professional, and independent body. This book is a study of that process of change: its causes, the obstacles encountered, and the political and policy consequences. It is a study of changing relationships between governor and legislature, caused in part by less aggressive gubernatorial leadership and

Political parties and elections in American states by Malcolm E Jewell( Book )

16 editions published between 1988 and 2001 in English and held by 506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This text explains how and why parties vary from state to state in how they operate and compete. The authors examine, among other topics, differences in political cultures, levels of two-party competition, and the rules and practices that affect party nominations and other aspects of politics. The authors also describe the interaction between state and national party organizations and demonstrate how much state party competition and state elections are affected by national trends. Underlying the work is Jewell and Morehouse's belief that the state political parties are alive and well; that they're adapting to aid today's candidates; and that there is close competition between the parties in an increasing number of states. Campaign finance at the state level is emphasized throughout the book. The authors describe the role of state parties in raising money and distributing it to candidates as well as the increasing importance that money plays in gubernatorial and state legislative elections. Many tables in the book provide cross-state data, enabling students to compare their home states with other states
