Jasper Johns : a retrospective by Kirk Varnedoe( Book )

17 editions published in 1996 in English and German and held by 917 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Accompanying the major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1996-97, Jasper Johns: A Retrospective contains 264 color plates illustrating Johns's work in all its facets - paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints. An introductory essay by Kirk Varnedoe, the exhibition's curator, looks back through the layers of memory in Johns's recent work to review the essential themes that have engaged the artist since his epoch-making Flag and Target paintings of the mid-1950s. In the book's second essay, Roberta Bernstein analyzes a crucial tactic in Johns's art: his many methods of referring to predecessor artists ranging from Leonardo and Grunewald to Cezanne, Duchamp, and Picasso. The illustrations for Bernstein's essay include a fourteen-page section reproducing the images she discusses - a striking visual demonstration of the variety of the art that Johns's work gathers together and transforms. Varnedoe then takes the opposite approach to Bernstein's, exploring how Johns's art has been interpreted by the artists of his and our own time: from the Pop, Minimal and Conceptual movements of the 1960s through to the new art of today, his work has proved rich enough to have a fundamentally influential impact on an extraordinarily diverse array of artists. The plates in Jasper Johns: A Retrospective are arranged in sections according to the stages of Johns's career, allowing comparison of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints from each period of his art as it has developed and changed. This comprehensive selection of reproductions is interwoven with an illustrated chronology tracing Johns's life and work with unprecedented accuracy and thoroughness
Jasper Johns : an allegory of painting, 1955-1965 by Jeffrey S Weiss( Book )

12 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 779 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume was published to accompany an exhibition of the works of American contemporary artist who works primarily in painting and printmaking, Jasper Johns (b. 1930). In the late 1950's, Johns emerged as force in the American art scene. His richly worked paintings of maps, flags, and targets led the artistic community away from Abstract Expressionism toward a new emphasis on the concrete. Johns laid the groundwork for both Pop Art and Minimalism. The exhibition of works depicted in this book was held at the National Gallery in Washington, concentrating on the pivotal decade 1955-1965 when Johns produced his most famous works. Alongside the full color reproductions of Johns' works are analysis of various diverse aspects of these early years of his career that established him as one of the great figures in modern art and stimulated much in art created by others

Who gets to call it art? : the legend of Henry Geldzahler, 1935-1994 by Peter Rosen( Visual )

2 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Henry Geldzahler (1935-94), star curator and cultural impresario, lived a life worth examining. The first curator of the Department of 20th-Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum, first director of visual arts for the National Endowment of the Arts, and the first full-time commissioner of cultural affairs for New York City, his landmark 1969 show at the Metropolitan is still remembered with awe. "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970" filled 35 galleries with more than 400 groundbreaking works of contemporary art. This film is not a full biographical examination of this singular figure's life, but rather a portrait in profile, as many of 'his' artists talk about Geldzahler and what his friendship meant to them

Jasper Johns : "the business of the eye" by Barbara Hess( Book )

6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents the life and works of Jasper Johns (b. 1930). Johns is an American contemporary artist who works primarily in painting and printmaking. His work is often described as a Neo-Dadaist, as opposed to Pop Art, even though his subject matter often includes images and objects from popular culture. Using wax-based paint, plaster relief, collage, and even commonplace objects such as brooms and rulers in his paintings, Johns achieves a sculptural texture in his work. He is arguably most known for his flag paintings of the 1950s, though other themes, including targets, numbers, letters, and maps, are also famously recurrent. Johns is widely considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. The author has included a chronological summary of Johns' life and work, covering his cultural and historical importance, with some 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions
