Storage of wastes from watercraft and disposal at shore facilities by Sheldon Cohen( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The program was undertaken to establish the effects and acceptability of a watercraft impoundment system in controlling the principal waste sources, sanitary and galley waste, with disposal at a shore facility. A demonstration unit was designed, built, and installed by Electric Boat on a commercial tugboat, and operationally tested and evaluated under routine working conditions for a period of two months. Results of the test data were analyzed, and component performance and system effectiveness were evaluated. Equipment and installation costs, as well as system operating costs, were identified. Sea water flushing was used for the water closets and urinal, but water conservation was used in the form of specially designed sanitary flush control and galley sink volume control devices to allow use of relatively small (120 gallon capacity) holding tank. The corrosion-resistant tank was provided with a level sensing system, an odor controlled vent line, an automatic flushing system, and a high level alarm. Shore-side transfer of the impounded wastes by suction pump-out of the tank via a quick-connect deck fitting was demonstrated. Solid galley waste was stored in a specially designed trash compactor. All components and subsystems performed effectively and reliably throughout the test phase

An analysis of subsurface currents and temperatures at a site on the continental shelf of the northeast United States by Clement Griscom( Book )

1 edition published in 1968 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study has three objectives, namely: to analyze subsurface current velocities in order to enhance prediction, to analyze subsurface temperatures for the presence of characteristic frequencies, and to investigate the interaction of currents and temperature variability. These objectives are expected to benefit the acoustician in his study of the temporal variability of transmission loss, the oceanographer in his study of coastal circulation and internal waves, and the fisheries researcher in his study of environmental effects on fish location. A lubricating-oil test program for the Maritime Gas-Cooled Reactor Program by I Huppert( )

2 editions published in 1960 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Maritime gas cooled reactor (MGCR) powerplant represents the first known instance in the history of major rotating machinery systems where helium is brought into intimate contact with lubricating oil. During system operation, the helium--used as the reactor coolant--mixes with the lubricating oil in both the rotating machinery components and the associated supply and drain systems. This admixtion quite naturally poses a unique problem with regard to the choice of a proper lubricating oil for the MGCR system

Ecology of bivalve molluscs and the culture of Mya arenaria by Edward A Zuraw( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Field studies were conducted to determine the importance of water circulation and substratum on the distribution of bivalve molluscs in a Rhode Island coastal lagoon. The feasibility of culturing the soft-shell clam, Mya arenaria, in artificial sea water was also investigated. The results of field studies indicated that the general water circulation pattern in the lagoon isn't a restrictive factor in determining bivalve distribution. Although molluscs such as Mya, Mercenaria, and Gemma were found to be commonly associated with substrates containing sand, and molluscs such as Tellina and Mulinia were commonly found associated with mud substrates, the broad range of sediment categories successfully colonized by many of the bivalves showed that the substratum itself also is not a restrictive factor. A hypothesis compatible with survey findings was formulated which states that the average quantity and quality of the food supply immediately overlying the substratum coupled with innate feeding capability of bivalves is primarily responsible for observed distributions. Although Mya was not successfully cultured through a complete life cycle, adults ranging from 3/4 to 3 inches in size were successfully maintained in artificial sea water at 4C for a period of two years
