Remarks on the influence of mental cultivation and mental excitement upon health by Amariah Brigham( )

67 editions published between 1832 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 670 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The object of this work is to awaken public attention to the importance of making some modification in the method of educating children, which now prevails in this country. It is intended to show the necessity of giving more attention to the health and growth of the body, and less to the cultivation of the mind, especially in early life, than is now given; to teach that man, at every period of his existence, should be considered both as a spiritual and material being- as influenced both by physical and moral causes, and that therefore all plans for his improvement should be formed, not from a partial view of his nature; but from a knowledge of his moral, intellectual, and physical powers, and of their development. I have endeavoured, also, in this work, to point out what I conceive to be the most frequent cause of the ill health of literary men in this country; and to show that only by carefully developing and judiciously exercising the organs of the body, and especially the brain, can mental labour be long performed with energy, without in jury to the health. I hope also that my remarks may serve to awaken some attention to the study of human Anatomy and Physiology; on which all plans of education ought to be founded. This work is given to the public with the hope that it will be read with candour, and that the facts adduced, though presented in a very imperfect manner, will have their proper weight"--Preface. Observations on the influence of religion upon the health and physical welfare of mankind by Amariah Brigham( )

15 editions published between 1835 and 2009 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first portion of the work, treats of past times, and of religions, and forms of religious worship, that have long since passed from civilized communities. Some allusion to them, however, seemed proper, especially to show that religious customs and institutions are changeable and progressive, and have constantly improved and been rendered more useful to mankind, as civilization and knowledge have increased. Other portions of the work are devoted to considerations arising from some of the forms of Christian worship"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved)
