New light on delinquency and its treatment : results of a research conducted for the Institute of Human Relations, Yale University by William Healy( Book )

31 editions published between 1936 and 1969 in English and held by 826 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors of this study conclude that juvenile delinquents are frequently found in those families in which the fulfillment of social relationships has been hindered at one time or the other. By taking the family instead of the delinquent as the unit of research, the authors have been able to compare 105 delinquents with 105 children belonging to the same families and thus serving as controls. The authors believed that delinquent behaviour is symptomatic of "the prevalence of profoundly felt emotional disturbances," and they feel that their diagnostic classification of delinquents has prognostic value
The structure and meaning of psychoanalysis as related to personality and behavior by William Healy( Book )

27 editions published between 1930 and 1978 in English and held by 549 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An organized statement of what has been contributed to date in psychoanalysis ... On the left hand pages are what ... may be called the orthodox theories and fact-findings of psychoanalysis--for the most part consisting of Freud's own statements. On the right hand, in smaller type ... are introduced (a) contributions of exegetical value, (b) some notable accessions to the psychoanalytic structure by 'Freudians' and (c) ... various ideas set forth by those who, still holding the major concepts of Freud, offer divergencies of theory or practice."--Preface

The psychology of special abilities and disabilities by Augusta F Bronner( )

35 editions published between 1917 and 2014 in English and held by 438 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the ever increasing demand in education for recognition of the individual rather than the mass, it is remarkable that no attempt has been made as yet to formulate specifically the problems of specialized abilities and disabilities. On the side of mental defect, interest is centered so largely on testing and caring for individuals of general low intelligence that the problems of narrower types of defect have been neglected and still are largely misunderstood. Some writers have touched upon related questions, mainly in referring to the fact of individual differences in mental capacities, but only general statements are to be found; nowhere else have special defects been outlined and nowhere can one find even enumeration of the types of variation that are practically important. In this book an attempt has been made to discuss practical aspects of special abilities and disabilities, to offer in detail methods of attacking problem-cases, and to present various types, both (a) of particular disabilities in those who have normal general ability and (b) of particular abilities in those who are below normal in general capacities"--Preface. A manual of individual mental tests and testing by Augusta F Bronner( Book )

20 editions published between 1927 and 1938 in English and Undetermined and held by 424 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Investigation of the mental capacities of human beings may rationally be considered a matter of prime importance for the individual and for civilization. To any objections that the procedure suggested in this manual is impracticable, requiring too much time or costing too much, there are sound enough answers. Mental powers are so numerous and diverse that short examinations are not likely to reveal them; inaccuracy of psychological diagnosis and prognosis results in positive harm to the individual and hinders the development of scientific psychology. The cost of as thorough testing and interpretation as can be made in the interest of better educational and social adjustments is very slight as compared to the expenditure that is undertaken by way of society's treatment of the individual in schools and, in the exceptional cases, by courts, institutions, and agencies that care for children. The human individual is certainly worth the cost of every scientific attempt at bettering his development and conditions of life. As it is, study of mental aptitudes and capacities takes a place in importance far below that of investigation of the working possibilities of a machine - the diagnosis of why the family automobile is not doing its best is willingly paid for when a similar study of the child's potentialities is not even recognized as a possibility"--Preface.
