This collection brings together 58 news stories by professional reporters who wrote of their own involvement in newsworthy events. Part One, "Reporters Are Like All of Us and Can Be Newsworthy Too," features accounts written by reporters who were employed by newspapers that went out of business, were victims of crimes, were accused of committing crimes, were involved in medical problems and cures, were suffering personal grief, were engaged in civic affairs as private citizens, and were involved in personal disaster. Part Two, "Reporters Can Become Involved in Their Assignments," presents stories written by reporters who encountered difficulties and overcame unusual obstacles in doing their work, engaged in bucking and exposing "the system," became personally involved in a story, encountered personal danger, created news through both orthodox and "offbeat" stunts, and were eyewitnesses to historical events. What Journalism Education Should Be All About by Curtis Daniel MacDougall( Book )

2 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Journalism is a profession, and the academic preparation for it whould be emulative of professional schools such as medicine and law rather than of liberal arts colleges. The purpose of education for journalism should be to produce the best possible newsgatherers, that is, reporters. In addition to preparing students in the basics of journalism, the journalism curriculum should take cognizance of the social sciences with the objective of correlating the instruction in the social sciences with journalism courses. The journalism student should be taught to conduct secondary and primary research, making limited use of the hypothesis approach. Teachers and students should become better acquainted through reduced class sizes, allowing closer attention to individual student's needs; and curriculum designers should increase the number of journalism courses while reducing liberal arts requirements. (Teaching techniques aimed at developing the skills and qualities necessary to produce first-rate reporting are included). (Rb)
