The intent of this volume is to "overthrow" the notions that slavery is sanctioned by scripture and beneficial to those who practice it. Bourne attacks the idea of reducing humans to property, making the distinction between service for pay and servitude without it, citing scripture to argue his positions. He denies the belief that Africans are "under the curse of Cain" or the "curse of Cannan," two popular arguing points that were said to articulate a divine mandate for slavery. The second half of the book treats the Old Testament, refuting the idea that the Law of Moses supported slavery, and shows how the New Testament condemns the practice. Bourne concludes by condemning slavery as a "heathen practice" and shows how slaveholding nations have been punished
