Regimentet blev oprettet i 1688 af Gustavus Hamilton som "The Royal Dragoons of Ireland" fra Enniskillen, og året efter skiftede det navn til "Wynne's Inniskilling Dragoons", de senere "Ross's Dragoons". Regimentet blev nedlagt i 1799 men genopstod 1858 på Dronning Victoria's opfordring som det oprindelig irske regiment, som det var, og i 1861 med navnet "5th (Royal Irish) Lancers".
