"Dieser Band enthält Klopstocks biblische Dramen Der Tod Adams, Salomo und David. Bei ihrem Erscheinen in den Jahren 1757, 1764 und 1772 wurden sie sehr unterschiedlich aufgenommen. Das kleine Prosadrama Der Tod Adams, von der zeitgenössischen deutschsprachigen Kritik teils gefeiert, teils verrissen, wurde schon zu Lebzeiten des Dichters ins Englische, mehrfach ins Französische, ins Italienische und ins Dänische übersetzt. Salomo erhielt zahlreiche - ebenfalls kontroverse - Rezensionen. David fand kaum noch Beachtung, aber eine eindringliche Besprechung durch Herder. In diesen Reaktionen wird unter anderem deutlich, dass sich Klopstocks Trauerspiele der zeitgenössischen Dramentheorie nur schwer zuordnen ließen. Außer den drei Dramen wird hier auch die Vorrede zu den Schauspielen geboten, die Klopstock 1799 anlässlich der Ausgabe seiner Werke im Verlag Göschen schrieb. Im Apparat werden unter anderem alle bekannten Zeugnisse zur Entstehung und Drucklegung der Werke sowie die wichtigsten Wirkungszeugnisse wiedergegeben. Der Anhang enthält ein erläuterndes Register zu den biblischen Personen und Orten."
