Gabriele Münter : the search for expression 1906-1917 by Gabriele Münter( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gabriele Munter (1877-1962) was one of the most important German Expressionist artists of the early twentieth century. Her radical and experimental approach to painting revitalised the genres of portraiture, landscape and still life. She achieved a distinct voice within the cross-currents of European modernism. Today, however, Munter's work is largely unknown outside Germany, her reputation eclipsed by male contemporaries such as her partner Wassily Kandinsky." "Gabriele Munter: The Search for Expression 1906-1917 focuses on the most intensively creative period of her career, when she took what she later described as 'a great leap' - away from Impressionism into a bold and brightly coloured Expressionism. Here more than fifty key works are reproduced, with essays by leading experts, Annegret Hoberg providing an outline introduction and Shulamith Behr discussing her role as 'more than a Muse' in German Expressionism."--Jacket

11 editions published between 2000 and 2019 in English and held by 312 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Introduced by Joanna Cannon, this volume of essays by postgraduate students at the Courtauld Institute, University of London, explores some of the ways in which art was used to express, to celebrate, and to promote the political and religious aims and aspirations of those in power in the city-states of central Italy in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. By concentrating on individual cases such as these, the essays provide sustained consideration, at the same time raising crucial issues concerning the role of art in the public life of the period. These illustrated studies introduce new material and advance new arguments, and are all based on original research. Clear presentation ensures that they are also accessible to students and scholars from other disciplines."--Jacket

Display and displacement : sculpture and the pedestal from Renaissance to post-Modern by Alexandra Gerstein( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The relationship between sculpture and pedestal is at the intersection of a number of art-historical disciplines, ranging from the history of design, architecture and urbanism to museum studies, yet because of its supporting role it has remained a largely neglected and unstudied field. This book will show how rich a seam it is for investigation. Essays range for 16th-century Venice to 21st-century London, and provide a variety of approaches to the issue. Each essay is a focused exploration into the making, placing or abandonment of the pedestal, plinth or socle within a particular context. Among the topics under study are the display and reception of sculpture and the displacement or mediation of sculptural meaning through inscriptions, ornament and other devices

"The renowned art collection originally built up by the industrial magnate Samuel Courtauld in the 1920s, and since greatly expanded thanks to generous gifts and bequests, is now permanently housed in the splendid architectural surroundings of Somerset House in the Strand. The nineteenth-century core of the collection reflects Samuel Courtauld's own single-minded policy of buying paintings by the leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, including such famous works as Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, Cezanne's The Card Players and Gauguin's Nevermore. As a result of subsequent expansion, the collection bearing Courtauld's name now also embraces important paintings ranging in period from the fourteenth century to the twentieth, including works by artists such as Bernardo Daddi, Lorenzo Monaco, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Claude Lorrain, Rubens, Gainsborough, Goya and Modigliani."
