Chamberlain, Germany and Japan, 1933-4 by Peter Bell( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book takes a fresh look at the record of Chamberlain and the National Government during 1933-4, when the first defence requirements enquiry occurred against the background of an emerging two-front danger from Germany and Japan. It explores the interaction between different departments of state and individuals in the formulation of strategic policy, demonstrating how, largely under Chamberlain's influence, Britain's priorities were redefined in favour of air defence at home rather than military intervention in Europe or naval defence of the Empire in the Far East. It portrays graphically the dilemmas facing Britain in an era when its resources were outstripped by risks and commitments, interlinking this with the debate about appeasement. It also explores the complications caused by relations with the isolationist USA and offers insights into the varied spectrum of opinion towards that country within the British Government

Hobbes on politics and religion by Robin Douglass( )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Thomas Hobbes, one of the most important figures in the history of political philosophy, is still widely regarded as a predominantly secular thinker. Yet a great deal of his political thought was motivated by the need to address problems of a distinctively religious nature. This is the first collection of essays dedicated to the complex and rich intersections between Hobbes's political and religious thought. Written by experts in the field, the volume opens up new directions for thinking about his treatment of religion as a political phenomenon and the political dimensions of his engagement with Christian doctrines and their history. The chapters investigate his strategies for showing how his provocative political positions could be accepted by different religious audiences for whom fidelity to religious texts was of crucial importance, while also considering the legacy of his ideas and examining their relevance for contemporary concerns. Some chapters do so by pursuing mainly historical inquiries about the motives and circumstances of Hobbes's writings, while others reconstruct the logic of his arguments and test their philosophical coherence. They thus offer wide-ranging and sometimes conflicting assessments of Hobbes's ideas, yet they all demonstrate how closely intertwined his political and religious preoccupations are and thereby showcase how this perspective can help us to better understand his thought."--

Anglo-French relations and strategy on the Western Front 1914-18 by William James Philpott( Book )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Within this context it looks at the problems of strategic coordination in the 'war of movement' in 1914, the planning of the costly Somme and Passchendale offensives, and the factors which finally led to the effective coordination of allied strategy and military effort by General Foch in 1918. By so doing it throws new light on the reasons why the allies failed to win a decisive military victory on the western front before 1918
Family politics in early modern literature by Hannah Jane Crawforth( )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This title considers the ways that family relationships (parental, marital, sibling or other) mimic, and stand in for, political ones in the Early Modern period, and vice versa. Bringing together leading international scholars in literary-historical fields to produce scholarship informed by the perspective of contemporary politics, it examines the ways in which the family defines itself in transformative moments of potential crisis - birth and death, maturation, marriage - moments when the family is negotiating its position within and through broader cultural frameworks, and when, as a result, family 'politics' become most apparent

Professor Richard Beacham of King's College London guides viewers through the Theatre of Epidaurus and the Lycurgian, Hellenistic, and Roman manifestations of the Theatre of Dionysus

British policy towards France, 1945-51 by Roger Woodhouse( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With the Allied victory in 1945 came a determination to find a new way of conducting relations between the European states based on trust and cooperation. Two nations in particular had the prestige and moral authority to give a lead which others would follow. Britain and France had kept faith with each other through the dark years of the war. Now they faced together the challenge of building a brighter future. As new governments in both countries embraced the principle of economic planning there were hopes that a united Europe might develop naturally from a co-ordinated Anglo-French programme of post-war recovery. Complications arose as the reviving industrial heartlands of defeated Germany found a key role in the Western half of a world divided by the Cold War. How the paths of Britain and France diverged and a different kind of Europe was born is the subject of this book
War and empire in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean by Ashley Jackson( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

By examining Mauritius and the Indian Ocean, this unique synthesis of imperial and naval/military history, reveals the depths of colonial involvement in the Second World War and the role of colonies in British strategic planning from the eighteenth century. In the century of total war, the British Empire was fully mobilized. The Mauritian home front became regimented, troops were recruited for service overseas, the Eastern fleet guarded the Indian Ocean, and Mauritius became a base for SOE operations and intelligence-gathering for Bletchley
Mediaeval & Renaissance( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The theater familiar to most modern viewers had a lowly mediaeval birth--in churches, on festival platforms, and in the great halls of the European nobility. Hosted by Professor Richard Beacham of King's College London, this program weaves together elaborate visual tours of the Globe as Shakespeare would have known it, the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, and the Teatro Farnese in Parma. Along with the latest scholarly research, this film surveys the evolution of Elizabethan and Renaissance stage formations and traces the conventions they established
