"The Social Psychology of Group Identity and Social Conflict: Theory, Application, and Practice examines the far-reaching influence of Herbert C. Kelman, a psychologist who is both a scientist and a peacemaker. Kelman is renowned for his contributions to the study of social influence as well as to international conflict resolution and the peace research movement. He developed the interactive problem-solving method, which helped lay the groundwork for the 1993 Oslo agreement between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization. His work has profoundly affected the ways in which social psychologists think about the links between personal and national identity, between intragroup and intergroup processes, and between individual behavior and the functioning of social systems."--Jacket

This study investigates international broadcasters' exchanges carried out during the postwar years. It is divided into 15 chapters. Chapter One gives general background. Chapter Two describes the seminar and Chapter Three the design of the evaluation study. Chapter Four discusses the seminar participants' reactions to the university phase of the seminar, and Chapter Six to the travel phase. Chapter Seven presents their retrospective reactions to the seminar as a whole. Chapter Five includes a brief discussion of the seminar staff's reactions to the university phase of the program. Chapters Eight to Twelve focus on the impact of the experience on the participants' attitudes and images. Chapter Eight discusses their views of what the sojourn had meant to them personally. Chapter Nine describes their views of America and American broadcasting in the light of their experiences. Chapter Ten provides some basis for assessing the extent to which the American sojourn had actually affected participants' attitudes. The findings in Chapters Eleven and Twelve are based on written questionnaires. Chapters Thirteen and Fourteen present analyses of the reactions to the sojourn among different groups of participants and the impact it had upon them. The fifteenth chapter brings together the major implications of the findings for improving the conduct of international exchange programs, for assessing their outcomes, and for understanding the psychological processes they set into motion. "This book is a collection of essential essays on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by eminent social psychologist Herbert C. Kelman. Few experts or practitioners know the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as Kelman, and for over forty years he has conducted interactive problem-solving workshops at Harvard University and elsewhere, engaging more than one hundred Israeli, Arab and Palestinian political activists, journalists and intellectuals in constructive dialogue. Spanning the years 1978 to 2017, the essays gathered here are still relevant today, and attest to the author's broad empathy for Palestinians and Israelis and his passionate pursuit of a resolution of their conflict based on consistent principles that satisfy the essential psychological needs and minimum political interests of both. The selected essays are not only insightful academic papers, but also serve as snapshots-in-time of the ebb and flow of conflict and peace efforts as well as guideposts for future would-be negotiators and facilitators. This volume will be of much interest to students of Middle Eastern politics, peace and conflict studies, and international relations, and will help would-be negotiators and mediators in practice"--
