"Professor Khare offers the first major, comprehensive study of what it means to be an Untouchable in contemporary India. 'Based on a study of the Chamars of Lucknow, the work provides a sensitive description of the Untouchables' cultural ideology and its role in helping them confront their everyday dilemmas and conflicts. Although India has legally abolished untouchability, in practical terms the Untouchables continue to experience social resistance and deprivation while changing social circumstances have given rise to a new awareness and increased expectations. In this book, the urban Chamar reformers, leaders, and ordinary persons speak for themselves, revealing a distinctive cultural perspective as well as a serious awareness of their changing role in Indian society."--Publisher description

Each section contains the text of an invited address by a nationally prominent person, reactions from the Green Bay faculty, and discussion and questions from the audience. Caste in Life: Experiencing Inequalities brings together nineteen stories of real-life experiences of caste-based social practices in India. This book does not seek to complement the mountains of existing literature on the subject, which has already been studied from all conceivable angles. Instead, it engages with caste as a subjective category of how it is lived and experienced. Caste in Life ushers in a new genre of narratives that try to capture a complex social reality through the prism of first-hand experience. The contributors write here about the role caste has played in their lives: W
