In deze biografie maken we kennis met Frances Mary Buss en Dorothea Beale, twee pioniers en voorstanders van onderwijs aan meisjes in Groot-Brittannië. Aan het begin van de 19e eeuw had je in Engeland geen kwaliteitsvol onderwijs voor meisjes. Meisjes uit de hogere klasse kregen in het beste geval iets mee via het thuisonderwijs dat aan hun broers werd gegeven. Meisjes uit de arbeidersklasse moesten zich behelpen met zogenaamde dagscholen en meisjes uit de meer gegoede klasse kregen eerder een oppervlakkige vorming. Tegen het midden van de 19e eeuw verbeterde de situatie enigzins door de oprichting van het Sueen's college en het Ladies' College voor meisjes. Dorothea Beale kwam aan het hoofd van het Ladies' College te staan en Frances Buss richtte haar eigen meisjesschool op. Beide vrouwen voerden een onafgebroken strijd om het onderwijsprogramma voor meisjes uit te breiden en naar een hoger niveau te tillen
