In reaction to the 'narrow-mindedness' of his fellow artists, symbolist painter Odilon Redon (1840-1916) sought to open the door on the invisible. Art, according to the theories of the symbolist movement, should 'add to human beauty the nimbus of thought'. This book features a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work

Odilon Redon and Emile Bernard : masterpieces from the Andries Bonger collection by Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh ( Book )
3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Around 1900 the Amsterdam insurance broker Andries Bonger (1860-1936), best friend and brother-in-law of Theo van Gogh, put together an imposing collection of art, among which were works by Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and, in particular, by Odilon Redon and Émile Bernard. The Dutch state acquired a major part of the collection in 1997 and these were housed on permanent loan at the Amsterdam Van Gogh Museum. The book focuses on Bonger's collecting career, which was remarkable for its time. In barely fifteen years this 'progressive friend of art' was able to acquire dozens of art objects through his personal contacts with artists. In 1907 he felt his collection was complete and withdrew from active participation in the art world. Only an occasional person was granted access to his closely guarded world and able to cast a glance over his extraordinary collection. This was and remained a hidden treasure trove which was renowned among the chosen few. In this book all the works from the original collection are shown together for the first time

Odilon Redon by Odilon Redon ( Book )
4 editions published in 2014 in English and German and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Odilon Redon's oeuvre marks the threshold between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, and thus also represents the interplay between tradition and innovation. Fractures and contrasts characterize his artistic development, from the black-and-white of his early, dark lithographs and works in charcoal to the veritable explosions of color in his bright pastels and oils. Bizarre monsters appear alongside heavenly creatures in a blend of dream and nightmare, nature and vision. Tending toward internalization, the mythic, sacred and biological motifs in Redon's works underwent a turn toward the mystical, not only on account of his subject matter, but also through the aesthetic aspects of color and form. Greatly admired by contemporaries such as Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas, Redon influenced artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp, as well as the Surrealists. The artist's brilliant ideas and his contextually, technically and materially multifaceted body of work are presented in this catalogue
