Viskningar och Rop = Cries and Whispers by Ingmar Bergman( Visual )

66 editions published between 1972 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 1,147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this film featuring the remarkable cinematography of Sven Nykvist, Bergman examines the relationship between three sisters. Agnes, a spinster lives with her housekeeper and is dying of cancer, while she is dying she is visited by her sisters, Karin and Maria. They quickly become entangled in old feelings of jealousy and selfishness. Agnes, tortured by cancer, is still able to transcend her sisters' pettiness to remember moments of staggering beauty in their past, but her sisters remain distant as Agnes' suffering reminds them of life's scars and their deep lack of connection. Only the maid Anna, who is deeply religious, is able to comfort Agnes in her extremity. After her death, Agnes returns to the living for a short moment, and in a dream-like sequence she asks her family for love. Cries and Whispers revisits Bergman's personal themes, the isolation of the individual, the quest for meaning in existence, and the conflict between the necessity of human relationships and their ultimate futility. Sven Nykvist's acute color cinematography captures the claustrophobia of the sisters home, using intense reds and whites

Bergman's fable about war centers on the marriage of two former musicians caught on an island in the middle of an insurrection. Their aimlessness, desperation and lack of courage contrast with an incomprehensible will to live. The film is noteworthy for its stark black and white imagery, statis camera movements and sharp sounds that, ironically, do not include music. (Does not circulate)

She enjoys a happy family life with her mother, her husband, daughter and granddaughter. But when a lawyer asks her and her mother to testify in a trial against the Norwegian state on behalf of the war children, she resists. Gradually, a web of concealments and secrecy is unveiled until Katrine is faced with losing everything she's built for herself, and her loved ones are forced to take a stand on what matters more: the life they have lived together or the lie that it's based on."--

Kristin Lavransdatter by Liv Ullmann( Visual )

Norweigian director Liv Ullmann was first introduced to the novel Kristin Lavransdatter at the age of fourteen. By nineteen, she was playing the part of Kristin on the stage. The story remained with her until she had the opportunity to direct her own version of the story for the screen in 1995. The story takes place in Norway's Gudbrandsdal valley during the 14th century. Based on Sigrid Undset's novel, the narrative follows the young Kristin Lavransdatter after she has been promised in marriage to Simon Darre, a wealthy landowner's son. Kirstin's parents have already experienced the death of their three sons and they are eager to see their oldest daughter well established in a marriage to a successful neighbor in the valley. However, a few weeks before the marriage, Kristin is attacked and almost raped while walking in the forest. Overwhelmed by her experience, she enters a convent. While recovering in the convent, she meets a young knight and begins a love affair, scandalizing the community

Höstsonaten = Autumn sonata by Ingmar Bergman( Visual )

10 editions published between 1978 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Autumn Sonata was the only collaboration between cinema's two great Bergmans: Ingmar, the iconic director of The Seventh Seal, and Ingrid, the monumental star of Casablanca. The grand dame, playing an icy concert pianist, is matched beat for beat in ferocity by the filmmaker's recurring lead Liv Ullmann, as her eldest daughter. Over the course of a day and a long, painful night that the two spend together after an extended separation, they finally confront the bitter discord of their relationship. This cathartic pas de deux, evocatively shot in burnished harvest colors by the great Sven Nykvist, ranks among Ingmar Bergman's major dramatic works"--Container
