Hardy rhododendron species : a guide to identification by J Cullen( )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 569 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For the enthusiastic amateur or experienced rhododendron grower, this landmark reference provides the keys to the accurate identification of the nearly 300 rhododendron species widely in cultivation. An extensive introduction places the work in context as it examines the history of Rhododendron classification and gives a full survey of plant structures throughout the many species. Species are listed in systematic order, so that similar species occur close to each other in the text. These are fully described, including complete citations of previous references and notes on the occurrence of wild-origin specimens in cultivation. Beautiful photographs include close-up shots of flower and leaf, microscope images of leaf surfaces, and easy-to-use diagnostic keys, making this the indisputable volume for plant identification. A milestone in the identification of rhododendrons, this will become an essential reference for botanists, nurserymen, and enthusiasts."--NHBS Environment Bookstore

George Forrest, plant hunter by Brenda McLean( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"George Forrest was a legendary plant hunter in the heydey of the British Empire. Risking his health and safety, he set off for China in 1904 on the first of seven expeditions to the remote mountains of the Sino-Himalaya. He collected mule-loads of seeds and over 31,000 herbarium specimens. He introduced hundreds of new plants to cultivation and many were named after him. He is well known in gardening circles, yet this is the first biography of Forrest, and the first book about him for fifty years." "This book, published to celebrate the centenary of Forrest's first setting out for the mountains of Yunnan, south-west China, brings Forrest to life, drawing on his own letters and those of his contemporaries. We see Forrest's first reactions to different cultures, how his love for his wife and family endured separation, and how he used local people as collectors. The book tells of Forrest's many adventures and his escape from death at the hands of the warring lamas. It shows the influence of his patrons, describes the excitement of his plant and animal discoveries, and reveals his rivalry with other plant hunters such as Reginald Farrer and Frank Kingdon Ward."--BOOK JACKET

A pioneering plantsman : A.K. Bulley and the great plant hunters by Brenda McLean( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Presents the story of Arthur [Kilpin] Bulley (1861-1942), a Liverpool cotton broker in an era of Empire and exploration. With a nose for profit and a love of flowers, he paid intrepid plant hunters to scour the mountains of China and the Himalayas for alpines and hardy plants. The plant hunters became famous, new species were discovered and gardens were subsequently enriched. The text portrays Bulley as a colourful eccentric and visionary with a passion for new and rare alpine and hardy plants. It describes how he created Ness Gardens from fields and established a famous nursery, Bees Ltd, to show and promote new flowers."--

It's proof that counts by Karla Black( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tiré du site Internet de JRP/Ringier: "This extensive monograph gives, for the first time, a detailed insight into the work of Scottish artist Karla Black (*1972 in Alexandria, lives and works in Glasgow). Reflecting the ephemeral nature of her work, the monograph resembles an artist's sketchbook that is still in the process of being used. Plaster, chalk dust, and Vaseline, or substances such as face powder, lipstick, and nail varnish are often the raw materials. These delicate works - whether transparent cellophane arranged sculpturally to hang from the ceiling, or fragile works of gossamer-fine powder sprinkled onto the floor - present references to the Minimal and Conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s. Karla Black extends the classical notion of sculpture through a process-oriented, performative handling of cultural connotations and untypical materials. Not only does she create an oppositional model to the brute effect of Minimal art, but through the use of unstable and simple substances her work ties into the history of "anti form," as defined notably by Robert Morris in his use of felt, or Eva Hesse in her deployment of latex."
