Kirchner and the Berlin Street by Deborah Wye( Book )

10 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Between 1913 and 1915, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted a remarkable series of works known as the Berlin Street Scenes. Acute depictions of twentieth-century urban life, these paintings are widely accepted as the high point of Kirchner's work and a milestone in German Expressionism. Kirchner and the Berlin Street is the most extensive consideration of this series in English, focusing on seven paintings and examining the entirety of the artist's creative process - his first explorations of this theme in sketchbooks used out on the street, and his ensuing studio investigations in a major body of prints and drawings. To bring out the complex meanings of the Street Scenes, Deborah Wye, The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Chief Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books at The Museum of Modern Art, draws on a range of Kirchner's motifs, including nudes, dancers, and cityscapes."--Jacket

"Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is arguably the most outstanding German Expressionist artist of the early twentieth century. This publication and its related exhibition pay tribute to Kirchner's inventive genius with a focus on his highly individual approach to color, which he viewed as the fundamental building block to his paintings. Yet Kirchner was a multi-talented figure and his work encompassed various media--painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, and even the decorative arts. Rather than accepting the traditional hierarchy that placed fine art solely at the pinnacle of an artist's achievement, Kirchner compared his activity in these various fields to a 'tightly woven, organic fabric, in which process and completion go hand in hand and one aspect drives the other on.' Beginning with his Dresden years as a founding member of the artists' group Brücke, and moving on to the periods he spent in the Berlin metropolis and in the Swiss mountainside resort of Davos, this survey provides a representative overview of Kirchner's three main phases and charts the transformation in his life's output. The essays touch on important topics related to his entire career. Jill Lloyd provides an overview and examines how color and technique were crucial, evolving elements throughout his work. Janis Staggs offers new insights into Kirchner's decorative projects, paying particular attention to his little-known metalwork and its close connection with his work in other media. Sherwin Simmons confronts Kirchner's modernity by relating the color compositions in his Berlin street scenes to the impact of electric light. Sharon Jordan analyzes Kirchner's colored woodcut series 'Peter Schlemihl's Wondrous Story' in relation to his long-abiding interest in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. And Nelson Blitz, Jr. provides an original interpretation of Kirchner's breakfdown and suicide by situating the artist's personal story in its historical and political context."--
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1880-1938 by Lucius Grisebach( Book )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ernest Ludwig Kirchner (188-1938) was a cofounder in 1905 of Die Brücke, a group of artists who took German art to the radical edge of Modernism. Kirchner, a leading figure in the group, went on to paint some of the finest scenes of pre-First World War city life, in his pictures of prostitutes and men in the streets of Berlin. But the outbreak of war plunged him into a profound crisis, both mental and physical. Recovering in the Swiss Alps near Davos, he found a new subject matter in the mountains and the life of the Alpine farming communities. In 1938, with the Nazis in power in Germany and the art he stood for dismissed as degenerate, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner took his own life. This study traces the life and work of an artist in whom (as in van Gogh) the extreme ambitions and perils of modern art were united."--book jacket
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner : mountain life : the early years in Davos 1917-1926 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner( Book )

13 editions published in 2003 in German and English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The German-born Expressionist artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) first came to Davos in 1917 on a rest cure. His body and mind devastated by the war, mountain life promised recovery and proved extremely fruitful artistically. If at first Kirchner met his new environment with the same nervous brushstrokes and perspectivist escalations found in his Berlin street scenes, his inner turmoil soon subsided, producing calmer and stronger bands of pigment and later an exalted experience of nature. New imagery resulted as well, going beyond Kirchner's primary focus on landscapes to include interiors and a series of self-portraits and figure paintings of rural neighbors. With its selection of paintings, works on paper, sculptures, photographs and tapestry from European and American private collections, this monograph shows how Kirchner, after Segantini and Hodler, became the third great painter of the Alps. Life in the Mountainsfinishes with works from the years 1925-26, when Kirchner returned to Germany, leaving his union with the natural life behind

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner : retrospective [published in conjunction with the exhibition "Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: Retrospective", Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, April 23 to July 25, 2010 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner( Book )

9 editions published in 2010 in 3 languages and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted city life as a joyous, bustling pageant, a sophisticated swirl of desiring bodies and colorful urbanity, giving Germany an energetic iconography for the glory days of modernity. One of the four founders of Die Brucke (The Bridge), Kirchner drew on German Renaissance art to conjure expressive exaggerations of face and posture, and brought to landscape painting a city-dweller's zest, imbuing tranquil scenery with riotous energy. Coinciding with a Kirchner retrospective at the Stadel Museum--the first to be seen in Germany in 30 years--this massive volume surveys the artist's several creative phases and genres. It features the famous nudes made during the Die Brucke era, his classic scenes of frenetic Berlin city life and Swiss mountainscapes from Davos, along with lesser-known canvases, works on paper and sculpture. With essays by renowned art historians, this definitive monograph offers fresh perspective on the continued relevance of Kirchner."--Publisher description
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner : Berlin street scene by Pamela Kort( Book )

"Few paintings have captured the public's imagination as thoroughly as Gustav Klimt's 1907 portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the wife of a prominent Viennese sugar manufacturer. The suggestive, gold-leafed painting not only rendered Bloch-Bauer's irresistible beauty and sensuality; its intricate ornamentation and exotic motifs heralded the dawn of Modernity and a culture intent on radically forging a new identity. With this painting, Klimt created a secular icon that would come to stand for the aspirations of a whole generation in fin-de-siecle Vienna." "But as synonymous as this famous model's likeness has become with Vienna's Golden Age, the real Adele Bloch-Bauer remained somewhat shielded from the public eye. Filled with well-chosen details, documentary photographs and historically related artworks, this singular, scholarly study attempts to reveal and honor the remarkable life and legacy of Adele Bloch-Bauer and her husband, Ferdinand Bloch, and their patronage of one of Austria's most radical forebears of Modernity."--Jacket
