From 'suspicion' to reanimation: The complexity of self-representation by Joseph Matthew Janangelo( )

1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The concluding chapter argues that there are alternative ways of representing the self. It discusses two works, Nathalie Sarraute's Childhood and Maximillian Schell's film documentary Marlene, which feature non-narrative, dialogic approaches to self-display. The chapter concludes with the suggestion that readers respect the work of individuals who, through experimentation with form and content, are creating new metaphors for self-representation--metaphors which encourage human beings to configure the self beyond the limitations of the monologue and beyond the constraints of storytelling

Voyaging: The performance of Being in the poetry of Saint-John Perse by Richard James Stroik( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

I interpret Perse's desire to write the "thing-in-itself" not as an absurd attempt to equate a word and an object, but as an exploitation of language's ability to perform and, thus, re-structure reality. A combination of J.L. Austin's theory of speech-acts and Martin Heidegger's notion of "thing-ness" allows me to postulate poetic discourse as a performance of Being when the poem's language acts out the very "thing" to which it refers
