John's task was to make the crooked straight and the rough ways smooth so that all men might see the grace of God (Luke 3:4-6). But this provoked them to ask yet again: "Why baptizest though then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?" (John 1:25). John's great reply stands at the heart of his work as the King's herald: "I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose" (John 1:26-27). Neither did John know at first who this was; he knew only that God was to identify Him by means of a sign: "He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, ... the same is He which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost" (John 1:33). When at last that sign was fulfilled, John saw, and bare record, that this Man was the Son of God (John 1:34). - Preface

These are the stories of five key ministers of the 18th and 19th centuries who changed the whole spirit of the Church of England and whose influence is still seen today. People today are frantically searching for security and are increasingly not finding it in a material philosophy where other people dictate to us. A church that hopes to transform this society needs to look to those who were enabled to perform the same task in a similar era. Each one of these men was associated with Oxford whilst proving their mettle as spiritual leaders. Each one kept alive and added to the passionate flame of a remarkable line of influential church leaders. No lesser authority than J.C. Ryle placed George Whitefield (1714-1770) as the foremost Christian leader of the 18th century. He, in turn, passed the torch to John Newton (1725-1807). Newton was as a spiritual father to Thomas Scott (1747-1821) and Richard Cecil (1748-1810) and they in turn were the spiritual guides to Daniel Wilson (1778-1858). Wilson launched a missionary emphasis still seen today in Oxford churches. What this book helps us understand is that the situation that prevailed when these men influenced their society is similar to that of today. If we want to change the world then their stories could inspire us to do just that. - Publisher

They were pilgrims by Marcus L Loane( Book )

This book is the story of four remarkable men who shared a common spiritual aim and ideal. They were David Brainerd, Henry Martyn, Robert Murray MCheyne, and Ion Keith-Falconer. Their average life-span was only thirty years, but they left a spiritual impact on their generation which was altogether out of the ordinary. Their lives covered the period of history from 1718 to 1887. A clear line of spiritual descent can be traced from David Brainerd to Henry Martyn, from Brainerd and Martyn to Robert Murray MCheyne, and from Martyn to Ion Keith-Falconer. They were all linked to the missionary movement which had its birth in the great spiritual awakening of the eighteenth century. They were pioneers in this missionary movement: Brainerd with the Native North Americans, MCheyne with the Jews of Palestine and Central Europe, Martyn and Keith-Falconer in the Muslim world of Persia and Arabia. Their contribution to missionary work would be enough in itself to invest their lives with outstanding interest. But the greatest single feature in their lives was their unqualified self-surrender to the claims of God. This book tries to pull up the blinds so that readers can see through the window and can trace the inner spiritual development of these exemplary Christians. It is the freshness and clarity of this record of personal devotion which makes the story of their pilgrimage so relevant for the whole-hearted disciple of Christ today
