6 editions published in 1963 in English and Undetermined and held by 493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Several years ago Allan Nevins pointed out that Missouri was "of critical importance to the salvation of the Union" in the Civil War. The richest and most heavily populated state of the trans-Mississippi West, Missouri was the key to political, economic, and, and military control of the western borderline. In the present work, the author makes a careful study of the fight among unconditional unionists, conditional unionist, and secessionists for control of Missouri
David Rice Atchison of Missouri, border politician by William Earl Parrish( Book )

8 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 412 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Part sourthern, part northern, and wholly western, Missouri symbolized the border. From the inception of the compromise that bore its name until the Civil War, the state was a battle ground with the abolition or extension of slavery the issue, and its travial was, in microcosm, the agony of the Union. David Rice Atchison was the leader of the proslavery forces. Though he fell short of heroic stature in an age of giants, his influence was in many respects greater than that of contemporaries who played larger roles. He possessed all the qualities that usually insure political success, but as Mr. Parrish shows in this biography, the circumstances of time and place condemned him to second rank."--American Historical Review

Volatile and combative, Blair was either strongly admired or hated by the public figures of his day. He held adamantly to his opinions and fought hard for his political causes. He was an ardent supporter of Abraham Lincoln and championed the president's program in Congress and in Missouri against the frequent assaults of the Radicals. Credited with being the principal leader in saving Missouri for the Union in 1861, Blair later served with great distinction at Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and in the Sherman campaigns throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. He is one of only two Missourians ever honored by his state in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol
