The emphasis in this book is on the first word in its title, archaeology. It does not claim to be a complete history, for in the historical period literary evidence can give a much more detailed political, religious and economic picture than has here been attempted. But nevertheless, a story of Palestine is the framework of the book, with the emphasis upon the contribution that archaeology can make. Down to c. 3000 B.C., archaeology alone can write the story. As the story is gradually merged into history, archaeology still plays a very large part. Only in the first millennium B.C. can history provide a reasonably consecutive story, and even then it would remain a one-sided, unbalanced story without the help of archaeology. This book therefore aims at showing the evidence that writes the story for the prehistoric period and in the historic periods concentrates on the evidence which supplements the written record, using this only as a background for the archaeological material. An excellent book has already been written by Professor Albright on the archaeology of Palestine. But this appeared in 1949, and gave the picture provided by pre-war archaeology, for active field archaeology was virtually at a standstill between 1936 and 1952. Since then much has happened, for Palestinian archaeology in both Jordan and Israel is an extremely live affair, as all branches of archaeology should be. The great modifications and amplifications for which fresh discoveries have provided the evidence is the justification for a new book

Amorites and Canaanites by Kathleen M Kenyon( Book )

23 editions published between 1966 and 2004 in English and Japanese and held by 587 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Biblical record it is clear that the principal occupants of Palestine at the time of the advent of the Israelites were the Amorites and the Canaanites. Who were these two peoples? Excavations have shown that towards the end of the third millennium nomadic groups disrupted the urban civilization of the Early Bronze Age in Palestine. Delivered in 1963, these lectures describe these groups and show that they can be linked with the Amurru of Syria. They are thus the ancestors of the Biblical Amorites. About 1900 B.C. these were succeeded by another group, likewise derived from Syria, but from the coastal region, bringing with them an urban culture which seems to have evolved in the neighbourhood of Byblos. It is equated with that of the Canaanite towns of the Syro-Palestinian coast. The Israelites entering Palestine had little material culture of their own. They settled amongst their Amorite and Canaanite predecessors and adopted their way of life. The light thrown by archaeology upon this way of life is thus very relevant to Biblical studies. Houses and tombs, especially at Jericho, have provided much evidence, and have shown that there was no real cultural break, at least until the twelfth century B.C.A study of the systems of fortification moreover, shows that a foreign ruling aristocracy, probably the Hyksos, could be absorbed without altering the basic culture. This was the setting in Palestine at the time of the entry of the Israelites

The fifth volume in the series of final reports on the work of the Joint Expedition to Jerusalem in the 1960s describes the discoveries made in six sites in the ancient city and places them in the archaeological and historical context of Jerusalem and the surrounding lands. Among the most debated issues are the extent of the occupation of the city during the Iron Age, the location of the southern defence line in Herodian and Roman times, and the date of the destruction of an Umayyad palatial structure. There is fresh information on the civic amenities of the southern half of the Byzantine city, and on the structure of the Ottoman city defences built under Sulaiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century. Fine glazed pottery, both locally made and imported, and the wide range of materials reaching Jerusalem through trade and pilgrimage, reflect elite patronage and the high status of the holy city under Islamic rule
